Just picked this game up...AGAIN!

Post by JudgeDredd »

OK...I've tried, again, to get into this game by giving it another go.

Why I find this so hard to get into, I'm not sure....I love the detail of these kind of games....

I think, personally, it's the lack of dircetion...lack of objectives.

Anyway, playing the first mission (Coral Sea?) I just got spanked by the AI CV force...both Yorktown and Lexington sunk! And that's with EASY AI!!!

So question is, is there any point to carry on? What is the victory condition for Coral Sea? Do I need my CVs?

Shorter scenarios are actually harder than long games, especially as the US.

It's dead easy to be unlucky against the AI. On the long run, it doesn't matter that much, you cannot be unlucky all the time.

But on a short scenario, it's a killer...

I would suggest playing scenario 17 on easy. It's one of the long campaigns. It will give you more time to play and to tinker around with the game.

Also, print the manual and read it. Use a pen and highlighter to mark the important sections. Read it while you play the scenario.

In this scenario you are on the defensive for the first few months. And you have two early goals:

1) Defend Port Moresby and build it up because the Japanese are going to bomb it and try to invade it.

2) Build up Luganville, while at the same time plan hit and run tactics against the Japanese as they invade and build-up Lunga (on the 'Canal).

Generally, work in a counterclock wise motion starting with Port Moresby. Click on the base and check on your bombers, fighters, etc.

Make sure you setup transport convoys to send supplies, fuel, and more AA and engineer units to Port Morseby. These will help you when the Japs start bombing it.

Setup fuel and supply transports to build-up Luganville.

Use your initial two carriers (place on Don't React), and send them south of Lunga so they can strike the initial Japanese landings there. But don't keep them there for long as the Japanese CVs will come a' calling.

You basically want to avoid any major head-to-head confrontation with the Japanese until you get more forces and better experience.
Drinking a cool brew; thinking about playing my next wargame....

Find a human opponent and start an email game. You just learn bad habits if you play the AI. Keep playing, I sucked at first but have come a long way.

Hi Judge
I have just taken the game up again and am playing my first PBEM game at the moment. If you want to play a short practice scenario I would be happy to, I am in the UK as well so it means move on a bit faster, my opponent at the moment is on the other side of the world so progress can be slow because of the time difference. Let me know.
