Axis 1940 campaign v. AI

Post by Becket »

Thought you guys might want an AAR from the gold version. Feel free to ask questions.

The game begins with Germany, fresh from its victories against Poland. The Phoney War is over and it's time to get down to business.

Here's the situation at the start of the game. The units at the top are the ones I have in West Germany. The units at the bottom represent the units in the Netherlands (including my invading units):

Image

The first order of business is to take out France. I send 4 infantry units into Netherlands, where they mop up the 3 allied infantry. Now it's time to deliver the killing blow. I send 5 tanks, one tactical bomber and one heavy bomber to Western France. The battle is close, but my forces are victorious and the Allies are forced to retreat. When the Germans capture Paris, the Vichy rule is triggered: all French nationality territories immediately convert to German-occupied Vichy territories. These territories are frozen; I cannot move forces in or out of these territories until the allies attack them. The French navy is destroyed as a result of Vichy.

Next, I send an infantry unit to take poor, undefended Denmark. Denmark controls a narrows that is the only entrance into the Baltic, so I send an artillery unit there, where it will fire on any allied unit seeking to enter or escape the Baltic.

Yugoslavia is the next target, since I don't want to putz about with them later. Until you attack Yugoslavia, your forces in Bulgaria, Rumania and Hungary are frozen. So, I send a tac bomber from Italy to bomb Yugoslavia. This unfreezes the little three. I send the militia units from each of the newly unfrozen territories to invade Yugoslavia, and also have the Italian fleet come out to bombard. Because militia are such poor fighters, my casualties are high, but I take the territory.

On to North Africa. I'm planning on driving hard to Cairo to put the UK into a little quandry: will they defend Cairo heavily or cede it to me? If they defend heavily, England may be open to invasion. I mass a group of 6 units in Tobruk for attacks in coming turns. Also, since the Allies may cut my shipping lines, I move 15 supplies from the continent to the desert.

Image

With this done, all that's left to do in this movement phase is to repair damaged structures in the territories I've seized, and to move units around to prepare for future offensives.

Fixing things costs supplies, and while I've got a lot of supplies at the moment, repairing a rail line, factory or resource completely costs 10 supplies per item. I've conquered a lot of territory, so I've got a lot to repair. Some very hard choices there, because I don't have the industrial might to replace supplies easily. I bite the bullet and repair all the factories and resources, but only repair about half of the rails. This cuts my supplies from about 150 down to 50 or so. Ouch.

Image

That finishes off the movement phase; on to production. I'll cover production in a later post. Suffice it to say that I have decided that air power will be a heavy component of my strategy, so I order up some tac & heavy bombers (I need to order them now so that they will be ready for the Russian Campaign). I spend a lot on replacing supplies and investing in research. Remaining points go to queue up 4 armor units that will roll off the line in Winter 41.

Japan: Spring 1940

I have not played Japan much, so this is all somewhat new to me. I start out conservatively. I send Kido Butai (that would be four carrier units with attached carrier air units in game terms) down to Formosa with some land based bombers.

We bomb the hell out of Foochow, destroying or damaging the three Chinese infantry there (with no losses to my planes).

Image

In the production phase, I don't have a lot of industrial power yet, so I again play it conservatively and focus on building some submarines. For research, I focus on Sub Evasion and Carrier Air Ship Attack.

AI Turns: Spring 1940

SU: the SU is frozen until attacked, but put a lot of units into the queue - 6 infantry, 2 armor, 2 artillery. I'm going to have to watch this, as it may make sense to invade ASAP to prevent any sort of military build up.

China: They reinforced coastal areas.

WA: The UK elected to strip units from throughout the commonwealth to reinforce Cairo, which now has 8 militia, 1 infantry, and a fighter unit. Scotland has been left ripe for the picking with only one artillery, one AA, and one militia to protect it. Still, not sure that I'm going to attempt Sea Lion given the noises the Soviets are making. The WA used their control of Gibralter to send a fleet after my Italian transports (the ones that got the units to Tobruk earlier). My one lone heavy fleet managed to take out a WA heavy fleet, but was then damaged along with a transport.

Germany: Summer 1940

Ah, so many tempting targets, but...I resist the urge to take Scotland or to invade Spain and take Gibralter. I've put everything into a strategy to knock out the SU ASAP. Thus my heavy bomber production: I intend to attack their rail system to prevent them from reinforcing key areas when I launch Barbarossa (tentatively planned for Winter 1941).

In the mean time, I contented myself with preparations.

Japan: Summer 1940

Time to get a little more aggressive, since the Chinese are massing an army east of Chunking.

I take the empty coastal provinces of Fooochow and one other whose name escapes me. Chinese militia rally in each province, but my forces are too much for them.

I don't really intend to venture into the Chinese mainland (not worth it), so the rest of the war against China will be about pounding them into submission with airpower. So, I send a flotilla of aircraft to bomb the massed Chinese army, with mixed results. 3 Chinese units destroyed, but I lost to carrier air units (damaged only, will be back in two turns).

In production I built a few more submarines and spent research as before.

AI Turn: Summer 1940

SU: This turn I learn where the SU was building its infantry and artillery: Not Leningrad. That's all that really matters. I need to take Leningrad in my initial assault in order to unhinge the SU's northern defenses and free up the Finns for operations. I should now have the forces to do so.

China: Decides discretion in the better part of valour and does not attack.

WA: launches a disastrous raid on my forces at Alamein - the WA sends a heavy fleet & tac bomber to attack my force. I incur no losses. The WA loses both the fleet and the bomber. However, payback's a bitch, and the WA takes out another of my Med transports.

Germany: Fall 1940

This turn I decided to risk an assault on Cairo. First, I sent the Italian fleet out to demolish the pathetic remnants of the Allied fleet in the Eastern Med. Then, I sent everything I had at Cairo (6 units from Alamein plus one infantry amphibiously invading from the continent). I inflicted massive losses on the British militia and lost only one militia unit myself, but simply didn't have the numbers to take it. With the garrison reduced to only 4 units, I should take it next round (I don't think the Allies have enough spare troops to reinforce, but I could be wrong).

The rest of the turn was all about getting ready for Barbarossa. I've intentionally played it pretty safe in this game, and will do a mostly safe Barbarrossa, except that I'm going to launch it about one or two turns faster than normal. If I do it right, it may knock out the Soviet Union. I've massed bombers in the area, first time I've ever tried that strategy.

Here's the scene on the border:

Japan: Fall 1940

Bombed the hell out of Changsha again. AA units continue to cause losses but I finally knocked one out.

It's time to start thinking about liberating the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, now isn't it? With that in mind I've begun moving supplies to depots at Palau and Formosa.

India looks weak...guess that's where the bulk of the Cairo troops came from.

AI: Fall 1940

SU: Built a couple of infantry.

China: Did not attack (if they attacked me, they would really leave themselves open - instead the AI is forcing me to expend resourcse to whittle it down)

WA: Sent their Atlantic navy at me in the med and I slaughtered them. They lost at least 5 light fleets to my one. They reinforced Cairo again, but probably not enough to save it.

I know I said I was going to launch the invasion of the Soviet Union, but on consideration of my force disposition, I elect to postpone to Spring.

So, I play it safe.

Sort of. All out attack in Cairo. I send five units from Alamein, plus two units from the continent (one artillery and one infantry). Plus two heavy fleets to bombard. It's a close battle but I win! Here's the combat animation screen. This screen is totally optional but does allow you to see the die rolls during combat as they occur, so I find it helpful (red=attack roll, white=defense value).

Image

After that I moved 2 more tac air, two infantry and one AA to the East Front to be ready in the Spring.

Japan: Winter 1941

Bombed Changsha again, destroyed two militia with no losses.

My economy is soo restricted right now. With all the units I have in production right now, I don't have any free production points to produce any supply or research. That's going to have to change. More resources, more factories. I'm looking at you, Southern Resource Area.

AI turn, Winter 1941.

SU: Increased research for armor land attack, and tac bomber evasion and land attack. Built a few more units. Here's the research screen (it's from Spring 1941 but shows the situation after Winter turn):

Image

China: subdued. Their economy is struggling now and I have them bottled up.

Western Allies: Sends their destroyers to take out two of my submarines. Rather than splitting its destroyer forces, the AI wisely sends three destroyers after a sub. The first attack misses, but the rule is that if a unit is fired on a second time in combat, its evasion is cut in half, so the second and third attacks demolished my subs. The WA also send a huge heavy fleet group into the med to wipe out one of my transports and damage a heavy fleet.

Germany, Spring 1941

One of the best Barbarossa attacks I've ever launched.

My air assets made a huge impact. First, I sent 5 tac bombers to assault Leningrad. They only killed one air unit and one artillery, but they fired on all the other land units in the area. Next I sent my German fleets to bottle up the port, sent all my armor in the north into Leningrad, and sent one infantry amphibiously into the area. Since all the Soviet units in the area had been fired upon, they all incurred a penalty to defense and were wiped out easily.

I made attacks all over the map, again relying on air power to soften strongholds before going in. In this manner, I was able not only to seize all of the second rank territories (the territories lying immediately behind the front line) except Kharkov, but also was able to prevent many Soviet units from retreating (they were outright destroyed).

Here's the situation after the attack:

Image

I spent all of my supply rebuilding rail, plus I repaired the Leningrad factory (it's going to be very hard for the Soviets to retake it, so I might as well use it to build supply and research). That depleted all of my supply, so the lion's share of my production went into building more supply.

Japan: Spring 1941

I got tired of that giant army in Changsha, so I sent a massive army of my own against it to whittle it down. I demolished the existing Chinese force there, but 6 militia were mobilized in the area when I attacked, and I had to retreat. Still, I took out the remaining AA units there and there's no real chance of a resurgence. My losses were heavy.

Then, I looked north. I didn't really want to attack the SU, because I just don't have enough forces at my disposal to do that and still pursue my own agenda. However, I can still help the cause. I sent my 4 carriers north to bomb the rail lines west of Vladivostok, destroying the rail. That will at least force the AI to spend resources to repair it, which may limit the number of forces it moves from Vlad to the west.

Production was laughable...most of my production was consumed by units that were damaged in the attack on Changsha. I had to delay a number of units in the queue, as I had more units in the queue than I had production points. Dang.

SU: the AI elected to pull all of its units to Moscow and make a stand there. Going to be interesting. It did mass a few units in Kharkov, but nothing I can't deal with. AAAAAH! The AI attacked in Korea, and took it, since I had left it wide open. Crap. Crap. Crap.

China: China moved to reinforce Changsha, but the garrison there is nowhere near as powerful now.

WA: The WA moved its fleet back into the med, this time bombing Sicily and killing the garrison there. That's a warning. My defenses are weak in the med, so I need to reinforce those areas.

Great AAR! As if I didn't want this game enough already. :)

So are you using the "advanced supply" option?

I am, Advanced Supply is the only way to go, in my opinion. Simple supply is nice for learning the game, but one of the things that makes this game shine is the ability to encircle areas and interdict supply (or, as the case may be, airlift supply to an encircled area).

Germany: Summer 1941

Didn't get to play much last night, but thought I would update with the results of the German turn. I rampaged throughout the SU. The Finns took Murmansk, cutting off the SU from Lend Lease (unless they open a southern route). My armies marched to the gates of Moscow, where the AI has concentrated 24(!) units in defense.

My challenge was to create a stable front line, because if the AI wants to, those 24 units in Moscow, plus 5 in Stalngrad, can take any single territory they want. I had to reinforce enough to make sure that (a) it would be costly, and (b) it would be impractical to take two territories.

To do so was difficult. I had to spend all my remaining supply to repair railroads to the new front lines, then get creative moving forces to the front. I spent every last drop of supply, but now believe I have a stable front. I may lose one of the captured areas, but doubt that I will lose two (if I do...then likely Moscow will be open to assault. I have 6 bombers waiting to grind Moscow to cinders next turn, and there's no AA in the city.

I was unable to do anything about the situation in the West, so I could be in real trouble.

Is it possible to force the Soviets to surrender? If so, under what conditions? I assume taking Moscow alone isn't enough.
