Modding Unit and Planet Stats

Post by hondo1375 »

I want to play around with the unit and planet stats, particularly resource production and usage, but can't seem to find them in any of the files. Has anyone found these, or even know if they are moddable? Thanks, Hondo
First wargame: Jedko's 1st edition "The Russian Campaign". First computer wargame: don't remember the name, but it was on punch cards.

Hi Hondo,
Due to the fact that Supremacy can be played on Internet, we decided to make those gameplay-related attributes be not moddable.
However, the graphics, sound can be easily modified, and the upcoming map editor also allows you to create new maps or edit the old ones.

Hope you enjoy the game.

Will it be possible to add new tile types? Nebula/gas cloud tiles and asteroid field tiles for instance, to create terrain.

So far I haven't repeated any maps, but I was wondering if pirates are preplaced as tiles or randomly generated?

Hi Zero G,

You can place pirates in the map editting tool. We're now working out the details and expect to release the map tools shortly.

Do pirates move? I haven't replayed any maps which is why I ask. I couldn't tell if they were tiles or mobiles. I'm guessing they must be mobs or people could just memorize their locations on each map.

As a sidenote, I have not detected any AI cheating whatsoever. I have not seen the AI do anything particularly stupid yet which is impressive, btw. Not making obvious mistakes is great in terms of maintaining suspension of disbelief but it's not enough to give an AI a chance of victory.

Long ago I used to feel strongly that AIs shouldn't cheat they should just play skillfully. Over time I've come to realize no AI running on consumer grade equipment can possibly challenge a human without cheating. Now I just think in terms of good cheats and bad cheats (i.e. how does a particular cheat change gameflow). Maybe you guys could add some options we can turn on like AI resource advantage, AI never runs afoul of pirates, AI can see how many ground units you have on every planet, etc..

Hi Zero G,

The pirates lay low until you draw near, then they move to intercept if you are within their territory. Left alone, they do not roam around the map.

Also AFAIK, the AI does not cheat whatsoever.

That's the problem. In 7 of 7 games now I have won easily with no challenge whatsoever. The AI is competent but it can't think of course. Can we get some kind of difficulty options? Actually I think the map editor may suffice (can't wait to see it). I can create maps that favor player 2.

Hi Zero G,

The map editor should be released in the next few days, and you can certainly create very challenging map scenarios with that. For the meantime, you might consider playing against another human opponent (internet or network game perhaps) -- you might be surprised. :)

That's a good suggestion. I can be patient while playing a game but not as much while sitting in a MP lobby; we'll see. ;) It's a part of why City of Heroes is the only MMO I've really liked. I really like teaming but can't stand waiting for a team before I can start playing. In CoH I can immediately start solo'ing a mission and assemble a team as I go.

Back to my question about tiles. Can we make new tile types? I would like to be able to put down impassable tiles as well as tiles that have other qualities. I understand your stance against modding existing game resources due to MP. Having a map that keeps all core values but adds new terrain types seems innocuous to me. ?

Hi Zero G,

First off, while I would never want to disuade someone from using our opponent-finder service, until the game is bought by more people, you're best bet is to post in the subforum here that you're looking for someone to play with (or respond to someone who's already posted).

And of course keep checking in the in-game rooms, to see if more people start showing up. :)

As far as the tile types question -- you are able to create impassable tiles, as well as tiles that have varying degrees of resistence (such as ice or grass) that slows units down. By creating steep hills and mountains, you can also control the flow of troops -- since this effects their movement range too.

I meant on the space map. Possibly an asteroid field that small ships can pass through but not large ones, completely impassable tiles, tiles that can be passed through but damage ships, that sort of thing.
