SHIII

Post by Flannel »

I've seen a lot of posts now about SHIII, but does anyone remember a game called, I think, 'RED STORM RISING' on the Commodore/Amiga? That was full of tension and I certainly used to feel a lot of dread and nailbiting when I became the hunted. It was in the Cold War era with subs such as the 'Kilo' class hunter killers and the US naval subs of that time etc.
That had thermals, going quiet, etc, a brilliant game, but I've never seen any other similar to that.
I would like to get hold of a good sub game, SHII was rubbish!

I still have that. Great Game. But I must confess, if you are going to get that, get EA's Sub Command, and you get the 688i, Sea Wolf, and Akula.

Tanker

I've got two out of three, don't have Akula.

I do like 688(I) the best.

Make my heading 090

aye, aye sir

Coming right to 090

btw: I still have Redstorm installed on one of my older machine and still play it once and awhile.

Have you guys been asleep ? 688(i) ??

Dangerous Waters is the sequel (and significant improvement) to Sub Command, which was itself the sequel to 688(i). DW has everything in Sub Command, plus a Kilo, a missile frigate and ASW aircraft to play with.

No no, RB, in the Sub Command game you can control the 688i, Seawolf, and Akula. I didn't mean the early '90s game SSN-21 and 688i. But Herstons right, grab DW if possible. In it you can con the 688i, Seawolf, Akula, and Kilo, as well as drive an FFG-7 OHP and fly a P-3C Orion and SH-60.

Flannel

Scope out Hertston's post on Dangerous Water and see if thats what your looking for.

I've been looking for something like that for a few years.

Didn't even know about it[>:]

I remember redstorm rising on my c64, use to play it ALL the time was a great game. As another poster said look at Dangerous Waters, really good game not as graphically impressive as SH3 is but its a superb modern setting game. Nothing like turning off autocrew and trying to pick up sonar contacts manually. Probably most amusing thing is sitting at the helm of a Seawolf sub then playing a Akula and wondering how the hell the Russians could find anything on that mess of a sonar. The different station layouts for each sub is really nice.

If you can get it to work properly. Most people are fine, but I (and some others) have major lag/stuttering mouse issues. Maybe a matter of running Win98SE (though jury is out). If you are one of the great majority who have no issues, methinks it is great...I love my P-3. Once a patch fixes my little issue, off to the Akula again (Lucifuge is right, the Akula sonar is a special challenge). The FFG looks a beast to run single handed (and makes the stuttering worse) - but then the big joy of DW looks the multiplayer - that looks great.
