External Combat Resolution

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

External Combat Resolution

Post by Windfire »

Looking though the various threads I have the impression that combat resolution is currently very embedded in the game. In a future patch/release would you consider including the option of conducting combat resolution external to the game. Not all battles would necessarily be external, but the players would have the option of selecting external resolution for any battle that looked interesting. The external resolution would in theory be an an export file with numbers, types and quality of units, with a subsequent way to insert the results back into the game. This would allow players to fight the battles as miniature battles with Crown of Glory being the campaign system for those battles.

Thanks for the consideration.

Hi Windfire,

That's an interesting idea. It would involve a bit of work as we tried very hard to make the detailed combat very integrated into the game, so there is much more to consider, as the game is designed now, than just casualty results. It's also very tricky transition point at which to save the game (at that point there are many temporary data structures dynamically instantiated that are not normally part of the core save-game data.) I'll keep it in mind though, perhaps for a future project -- it's a neat idea.

Thanks for the quick response. I would be happy to see it in a future product/game system if the current one does not support.

I like the dynamics that are projected to be captured in the system. From the description on your site, it looks like players will have some of the options their historical counterparts did (Levee en masse, recruiting Marie Louises, etc.). Definately looking forward to playing the game.

Different thought - future expansion idea may be add a campaign starting back in 1792 with the French revolution and all the turmoil in France along with the partion of Poland.

How about this, the same idea but kinda in reverse..."battle scenarios" as addition to the 4 campaign scenarios we now have. It would be a battle save file that when loaded set up a historic battle; ie, Austerlitz, Borodino, Leipzip, Waterloo, etc...that would be kinda cool I think!

Maybe a "battle editor" for players to create their own such scenarios too? Or am I just wistfully dreaming?

Windfire, the game already includes a 1792 scenario.:) You'll find, btw, that the diplomatic system is just about the coolest ever included in a computer game. You'll be partitioning Poland and establishing protectorates with the best of 'em.

External combat resolution is a dream of many grogs for many different games (EU, anyone?). But it's a pretty tough thing to implement. That's why the tactical module included in CoG (as simple and, yes, unrealistic as it is) is a great feature of the game. No more random dice rolls matching up against abstract strength points. The devs really deserve a pat on the back for including this -- other strategy game designers don't like to even attempt it because "it would be designing two separate games in one."
