How much research is too much

Post by RetardedNameRequired »

I got WAW last saturday and played pretty much every waking hour saturday/sunday right up to about 2am both nights.....am curious what the rest of you think is spending too much on research? So far the tactic thats worked for me is to spend the first two years gearing up resource wise not spending much on units then once i'm set on research for germany i start cranking out the units, meanwhile i've conquered china and set troops to sandwhich SU between Japan and Germany, unfortunaly this tactic leaves japan wide open to demolish japans fleet and cut off japan from its resources for production :( sadly thast the state my current game is at although WA hasn't yet conquered anything japan had taken and russia is now completly taken so germany can concentrate on the western front currenlty spring 1946 (auto win=off) or i woulda won by now as i've surpassed the WA for produciton capacity.

Just curious about your opinions on the research aspect though :) suppose one could start the war ealier and just research slowly, my first few years i poured a great deal into research on infantry/tanks/fighter on the order of 15+ average a turn. Not sure that this is even possible agains a human opponent though cus im not certain that a human player is obligated to NOT declare war as russian/US or do they have to wait till the axis unlock them like in single player...

thanx for any input [&o]

I favor attacking on more or less historical timelines and doign the research gradually as I go.

The main reason I favor this is population.

Resources may be the limiting factor for determining your overall production and in ataining the magic number of 70 for automatic victory.

Population is what will limit how many units you can field. You can only accumulate up to double your base population value. Points not spent will be lost. Past '43 population is the end all and be all of German production in my opinion. Even with resource shortages, you will have excess production for doing crash research projects in the late war. Somehow this feels historically accurate.

And just like in history you get to jet fighters, super heavy tanks, and advanced subs about the same time you begin to run short of all those units. [:)]

I actually do ok in this regard(with Germany),
I spend 8-9 points a turn until I attack Russia in spr41. The first thing I do is go for
a)tank evade
b)tank attack
c)plane move
d)plane vs plane
e)sub evade and
f)torpedo.

Not all at once, set priorities, get the tank evade and tank attack before you attack Russia if you can, after 1 or 2 turns you should have plane move and plane fighting. Every turn put at least 1 point into sub attack and torpedos and after your first evasion and attack for tanks, pick one, not both, evade or attack and concentrate on that followed by attack or evade for inf from that point on, I don't bother with any more research because it sucks too much, but by the time you get the majority of this you should have russia pushed back. Go through Yug, and NW corner(always forget the name) and pincer them.

just my 2 cents, different strats for different people. of course, I need help with Japan ;)

I do agree that the first thing I try to get as Germany is tank evasion.

I also place high priority on increasing figher range to 2 (so you can bomb Britain among other things).

Heavy bomber range to 4 since this gives you an airdrop range of 2.

Infantry evasion, fighter air combat and evasion, as well as tactical bomber ground attack.

I am a big fan of my units surviving the battle. In many cases, your attack ratings with things like tanks are good enough to score a hit over almost any opponent they will face. It is only later in the war when enemy tanks are getting upgraded that I worry about increasing tank attack.
