Negative Population

Post by Alan_Bernardo »

Is being in a situation of having negative population soley a result of having built too many units or having too many units in the queue? Or are there other factors, like having to repair units?

What is the consequence of having negative population?

As the manaul states (p. 80), "Those units in the last (largest) box are placed on the map as long as there are two Population Points to be expended (if needed)."

How do you get more population points?

Thanks,

Alanb

Population point come from FRIENDLY territories under your control. As going to war and conquering others doesn't generally make friends, it is fairly fixed.

You will need to adjust your production to match what you actually have available to keep things running smoothly. You can do this by pausing things being produced (right-click them) or cancelling things (left-click them)

As units are damaged, they go back into the production queue to be repaired. This will push you into negatives.

Negative pop is result of having too many units scheduled for production in a given turn. Existing units, already on the map, do not influence pop numbers on production screen.

When a unit is damaged, it goes back to production queue, and thus will count against pop limitations.
What is the consequence of having negative population?

Some units won't be produced. If you don't make a choice to stop (pause) the unit yourself, game will have to decide for you.
How do you get more population points?

You don't, ie, you can't.

You should have thought about that earlier, like, 20 years earlier - perhaps by outlawing the use of condoms or something [:D]

Thanks for the replies. I get it now.

Excellent game. If I were a history teacher, this might be an excellent way of students getting a handle on the mechanics and strategy of WWII.

As it stands, I don't teach history, unfortunately. :)

Alan;

As a history teacher, this game is having a profound effect on my students! (I bought 2 copies, 1 for me, 1 for class[:)]) I think I am creating a whole new generation of Wargamers in my class!! [:D]Instead of the usual two weeks dedicated to WWII, I am putting four weeks to it! They love it!![&o] One week into gaming in the class room and most of my students are begging parents for money to get their own copies!

Way to go Matrix/2by3

Kudos! [&o]

Mike,

I teach English at a high school in Cleveland, Ohio. I've often thought of using computer games-- GGWaW would be a good choice-- in my classroom. I would have students compete while others would write after-action reports.

The only problem is that computers are just not as available right now as they maybe should be.

I know if I were teaching History (I'm close to being certified in that subject) I'd do exactly as you are doing. And GGWaW is a great way to get kids to look closer at WWII.

Let us all know how things are going.

Alan;

Glad to meet a fellow educator! (mayhaps a game sometime?[;)])

That is a great idea having them write up AARs for the game! I hadnt thought of that for my class. Right now they are designing portfolios of specific countries with everything from economics info to R&D. They are even doing "resume's" of leaders and generals from the war. They love it! I would say that using a "video game" to engage students is something that has been missing since the Pac-Man era. Matrix/2by3 have given me a tool that not only makes my life "complete" (hehe..) but also grabs the attention of the inner-city kids I teach. (btw - Indianapolis, IN)

Cheers Alan;

(p.s. good luck on the endorsement in history!)

Mike,

A game might not be a bad idea. For the past ten years I've only played war games on and off. I got into WitP for a while and learned how that game works, kind of.

The GGWaW I've been playing furiously for a few days now, learning the system and what works and what doesn't. But I'm pretty much new to this type of game. Using the WA, I could probably beat the AI in a close battle, maybe.

So if you want to try a PBEM game sometime, dont' expect anything heroic from me. :)

My email is alanbernardo@comcast.net if you want to drop me a line.

Thanks,

Alanb

Its not just teaching kids! I'm working with a couple professors at the Naval War College on ways to use the game to illustrate planning and strategy concepts in teh Strategy and Policy curriculum. I'm getting a copy to folks at West Point as well.

Interestingly, to make it appeal to senior officers, you can't just "play the game" you have to make a power point based "decision making layer" or they get so invoklved in trying to win theiy forget about their plannng principles. I suggested that that was an interesting 'pathology'...

Paul;

That is great, reaching out to the military. I feel (as a veteran) that this type of critical thinking and analytical disection of the game can aid even the most jaded brass! [;)]

I like the power point idea....hmmm...I think high schoolers could handle that too....

Love the "pathology" comment! hehe![:'(] The "diesease" of my mind this game causes is addictive! I can see why even Naval War College attendees catch the fever!

Again, kudos on a spectacular game!

Hi Alan,

I know what you mean about computers. I teach in Brecksville, (just south of you in Cleveland) and I was using 4 very old Macs (2nd and 3rd generation) in addition to an old I-Mac that was purchased about 6 years ago using Ohio Schoolnet Money. I finally wrote a grant request to the Martha Holden Jennings foundation and got a very nice Toshiba Laptop along with a Data Projector. It has totally changed the way I teach.

On a side note, it has also changed the way we watch movies and have reward days. (I teach 5th grade) My entire class (for the first time ever) finished their research reports a day early. I had never had an entire class turn them in on time before so I was very impressed. We had a free period of language arts where we hooked up the PS2 and played DDR Extreme for about 50 minutes.

Since we are so close, maybe we should get together for a game as well.

Hi all

Might as well add my name to the Ohio educators list - I teach Math at a HS just north of Columbus - been into wargaming for years - played with my brother in law a lot in the pre kid era - AH VITP, Russian Campaign, and Gettysburg - then the kids got older and no time - got back into it with computer games

Paul,

Excellent idea about the Power Point presentation. Doing so will force those professors to consider what exactly they are doing and what the consequences might be. I might try that myself.

Donkuchi,

Brecksville, I know the place. Here in our high school we have mostly Dell's. We have one computer lab, which is of a considerable size, maybe 30 computers. Title One money pays for that. The rest of us have maybe one or two computers each for our classrooms, depending on how much you suck up. :) I have one very old, Pentium II processor in my room, which obviously won't run GGWaW.

I have one PBEM game going now and one four-player in the works, so I'm about at my limit. I really want to learn how to play this game effectively before I play any more PBEMs.

Jcrohio,

Nice to hear from another educator. I was in Columbus about three weeks ago, watching my alma mater win the Division I High School basketball championship.

Go Buckeyes!

Great game Matrix and all those involved. I'll be looking forward to the Cival War game. Any news on that project yet?
