Graphics Corruption ATI Raedon 9200

Post by rat »

Whenever I try to play WAW I get graphics issues. The screen becomes all pixelated and unreadable. I have the latest patch and latest drivers and running direct X 9.0c. I am going to loaded game up on 2nd computer that has a Geforce 5500 card and see if it runs on that.

Do you have a LCD monitor?

Post a screenshot so we can see how the screen looks like...

As I posted in an earlier message, I'm having the exact same problem with my Radeon X800 XL I'm running a 19" CRT.

Here is an example of what we are talking about, I've cut the file size down to 640x480 to make it a bit smaller. I've turned off Anti-Aliasing and aniso filetering but still have this problem after a few turns. It seems to be ok at start and then get progressively worse until I have to shut down GGWAW and reload and the cycle starts over. This is on a ATI Radeon X800 XL AGP.

you mention it starts just a little pixelated then eventually gets this bad?
is this only on production screen or all screens?

Yes, sometimes it will start out say just arround the title then by next turn the whole screen. I've seen it on all the screens including the map. What it does on the map is odd. When I see this on the map it show up in a hodge-podge of regions (think of a random checker pattern) normally adjacent and normally sea reagions.

Thanks, let me know if I can help sort this out.

Here is an example of the problem in the combat screen. It seems to be linked to "Hi Res" mode.

I saw something similar at first.

I know I'm running this on a laptop that's the low end for this game (whole 'nother topic why a WWII strategy game has such high machine requirements. A mode that looks like cardboard counters on a paper map held down by books on the corners could work for me.) 512 MB Ram. Nvideo card with 16MB of ram. All on a Toshiba Satellite.

I thought I saw the problem first appear when the video for the fall of Paris ran. After that I had all sorts of video problems. Pixilation like these pictures. Things like the envelopes on the Yes/No phase ends being pixilated around just the buttons.

I changed two things. One was I took the hint and went to Windowed mode over Full Screen. I was on Low graphics already. I also turned off the videos that run, since that was where I thought I first saw the problem.

Since then, no problems. Can't tell you which changed solved the problems.

I don't miss the videos, and on my screen, windowed looks the same as Full Screen with a blue bar at the top and I can get to the task bar, so I'm a happy camper right now. :)

please try the following tests to help us figure out what is happening:

1) Run the game in windowed mode, does it get scrambled in windowed mode?

2) Set the window to 1024x768 and run it in full screen mode. Some cards can’t sync different background sizes and game sizes.

Also try turning the videos off - that solved a lot of similar problems running the game on my laptop (its a GeForce 4 mobility based video system) - even after i updated to the latest version of Windows media player.

OOPS see that was already done - I'll leave this for others though.

When you have graphics probs, try turning off the vides first.

Maurice,

1. I've tried that. If you notice the screenshot with the corrupted combat screen, it is in windowed mode.

2. By this do you mean set my desktop resolution to 1024x768 and then run the game at 1024x768. I'll give that a try but I would not consider that a satisfactory solution. I've got a 19" monitor and would not like to loose the real estate and resetting all my icons is a major pain when I shrink the desktop res.

Paul,

I'll try with videos turned off.

This only happens for me when running on "high" graphics mode.

System Specs.

P4 2.8ghz
1gb ddr333 memmory
ATI Radeon X800XL AGP video with 256mb Memmory.
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum Sound.

THanks,

Kevin

yes, thats what i mean. i'm not saying it's a permananet workaround but it will help isolate the problem

Perhaps not to helpful but. Yesterday I installed my newest drivers for the Radeon 9600tx . The replay buttons were not showing and the game crashed in my first game with the new drivers today suddenly. I will go back to my older driverset were I hadn´t any problems with stability.

Unfortunately graphics drivers, as with other software, often have bugs. Trying multiple versions can help. It sounds like running in Low graphics mode is the work-around for now until we pin this down to either a bug with a particular driver revision or a bug in the game.

Paul,

Afraid we ATI users are stuck with low res (BOOO HISSSS!!!!!!!) for time being.

Running without videos - Still had graphics corruption at hi res
Running with Desktop set to 1024x768 - Still had graphics corruption at hi res.

Hope you or ATI can get your hands arround this, have you contacted them about this?

Thanks,

Kevin

The ATI 5.3 and the new 5.4 drivers have been reported to have problems in several games. I might recommend staying with the 5.2s for now. You should also google for "Driver Cleaner Pro" and run that between driver installations to make sure no remnants are messing things up.

FYI, I have an ATI Radeon 9200 on a secondary machine and it can run in both modes without any corruption, so this does not appear to be universal. As always, I would recommend trying a variety of different driver settings to see if you can find a combination that doesn't cause this problem, also trying multiple driver revisions is a good idea.
