Lest We Forget - ANZAC Day

Today ( 25th April ) 90 years ago the first Australian and New Zealand Army Corps ( ANZACs ) stormed the beaches at Gallipolli. The courage, determination, good humour and mateship displayed by the ANZACs in this battle and the ensuing battles in France and the Middle East set them apart and created the ANZAC legend we honour today.

Twenty six years later ( 1941 ) Australian and New Zealand soldiers were again fighting together in Greece. Again with the odds stacked against them they fought a dogged delaying action and withdrew to Crete. They displayed those same great qualities which inspired both fear and admiration in their opponents and enduring love and friendship from the Greek people they fought along side and endeavoured to protect.

As in all wars many great men and women paid the ultimate sacrifice. Today we honour them and their comrades who survived to keep the spirt of ANZAC alive today. May we remember them....

back in 1996 I had the pleasure of taking a holiday in Crete where, amongst other things, we visted Suda Bay Commonwealth War Cemetary. The scale is so much smaller than those in France but that only made it a more personal and moving experience. So many fallen from so many nationalities lying together in a small corner of a foreign land.
