Can the ui wings be retracted?

This 2005 re-release of the updated 2000 sci-fi classic puts the player in the role of building a space-faring civilization.

Near as I can determine once the wings in the ui have come out for a game, they can't be removed, even temporarily.

Since these wings take up a lot of screen real estate I'm hoping I'm just not able to figure out how to do it.

Anybody know?
