Greetings gentlemen and welcome to our GGWAW PBEM AAR[8D]
Monty and I have agreed to play and record an AAR of the game so that new players can see what a couple of real pro's can do .... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA .... just kidding. This is my first AAR so don't expect too much. We decided to play without FOW so that we could more openly discuss our game. The real intent here is to have fun, yet play a competitive, hard fought game, for all to enjoy ... except Monty that is, who will feel nothing but the sole of my leather boot[8|]
Comments and discussion are welcome.
PS - If someone could be so kind as to send me a quick email telling me how to take pics and put them in here that would be wonderful. Or even if someone could post a link or explain in here I would appreciate it.

Germany Spring 1940
After a winter spent contemplating our astounding victory in Poland and watching those allied fools sitting in their holes all winter, High Command has decided the time has come to teach the French and their Tommy overlords a lesson in German determination.
"Missed the bus" have we? We shall see ...
Combat Operations
Denmark's King Christian X wisely accepted our ultimatum and allowed German forces to take up position to protect Danish territorial integrity. Sent to garrison was one German Infantry, Flak, Arty and an ME-109 Squadron for good measure. The German fleet can now safely focus on escorting those valuable resources from Scandinavia, without fear of the English Navy.
The Benelux countries were quickly smashed by superior German troops. Four infantry and one artillery unit were assigned the task. The outcome was never seriously in doubt. The allies lost two infantry units destroyed and one dameged, while the Wehrmacht suffered one damaged infantry. Some brave Dutch sailors did manage to escape to England however in a light cruiser. A German Battleship was sent to sink the Dutch ship, but was only able to damage the vessel, before losing her to the damn North Sea fog.
France would pay for our humiliation at Versaille and seven armoured units, one tactical and one bomber squadron were sent to collect. The French had no fight in them and were quickly overrun. Germany suffered one damaged Panzer unit. With the fall of the cowardly French, our honour has been restored. Surely the English will now realise that resistance is futile...
A bomber Squadron was sent on a sortie to NA9 (sea zone west of France) and managed to sink one allied transport.
Non Combat Operations
Italy acted quickly to secure the Central Med. and reinforce North Africa. Almost her entire fleet is being used for this purpose. German forces were redeployed to protect our new French provinces and to provide offensive capability wherever it is needed next. Spain looks very tempting as does England, which is watched with hungry eyes from the French coast. Yugoslavia has been offered membership within the Reich, but just in case she foolishly refuses, German units are ready to "persuade" the local population. The Afrika Korps has also been founded and sent to North Africa, in order to stabilize our Italian friends. High Command holds little hope for any real success in Africa, but we must take steps to insure things do not get out of control.
At any rate the die has been cast! The survival of Germany can now only be assured with the destruction of all who would stand against us ....

Japan Spring 1940
The brutal war with China continues ....
With any hope of peace in Europe lost, we must now decide what our role will be in the upcoming conflict. The Chinese have been a thorn in our side for almost four years now and perhaps now it is time to finish what was started so long ago, certainly our citizens desire this war with China to end. Our German allies however would like nothing more than our assistance in the inevitable battle against the USSR. The Emperor favours a bold move in the Pacific, which would surely bring the Americans into the war. Whatever path we choose, we must be certain that it will lead to our dream of a "Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere". Our PR department says that is a catchy name. I simply want Japan to dominate Asia and crush all who oppose her. Is that too much to ask?
Combat Operations
A small air attack was made vs China with one fighter and one bomber. One Chinese infantry was damaged and a militia was destroyed with no air losses.
Non Combat Operations
Every Japanse plane and as many land forces as I could ship were sent to China. The IJN was mostly kept in port to preserve supply.
Japan will be ready .... THIS I COMMAND!

Couple of Real Pro's......
HOHOHO![:D]
Qbeam and HarryB will regal you with my "Fail to take Spain" Gambit, or "Kick the Axis Fleet outta the Central Med, but not put a militia in undefended S. Italy" Counter, or the ever popular "No supply anywhere NEAR Leningrad" defense...
I have learned the hard way, and I start this game with the 6 RP (at least) mistake of the "Let's pull all 4 of the transports into Port instead of 3" Make Hitler Feel Complacent Dragon.
Well, on to Bwizness:
Dateline London Sp'40: Dutch Troops Make Heroic Defense of Rotterdam!
Although heavily outnumbered and outgunned, the Dutch manage to punish the Wehrmacht in their dastardly sneak attack. Although ultimately defeated, Dutch troops manage to maul 1 German Inf Corps, and the Dutch Navy evades certian destruction, although with heavy losses, to fight another day.
Dateline Paris Sp'40: France Capitualtes!
France Falls to Nazi Hordes! All French units hoisted the white flag as soon as shots were fired, except for one brave platoon of S-35's, who, filled with fine french wine, and the courage it instills, managed to maul a division of Mark-II's. Churchill is quoted as saying"Considering who we are talking about, we'll take it".
Dateline Reykjavik Sp'40: British Fleet Chases U-35 for 3 months! British Destroyers play cat and mouse with a German U-Boat in the Atlantic for 3 months, using BB-guns, spitballs, and refuse thrown over the side. Shortly before his sacking, Cmmdr Noluck was quoted as saying "What's a depth charge?" (I rolled 3 one's, needing only a 3 to damage, 6 to sink... 12 supply for nada).
Dateline Moscow: Stalin Confirms Great Alliance with Germany, orders draft.
Dateline Chungking: Chang declares "Year of the Turtle". All Commanders, and units for that matter, withdrawn for consultations and training in the interior.

Air Raid on Essen Kills 15
Essen Daily News
Citizens of Essen awoke this morning to the smell of smoke and sirens, and a new world. For the first time since hostilities began, the English dogs have bombed a German city. 15 are reported dead and dozens wounded from the surprise raid. A local band-aid factory was the apparent target and the production capacity of the factory was reduced by at least 50%. The Furher has expressed outrage at the bombing of a German city and has promised the citizens of Essen that he will drop the "n" and add an "x".

Germany Summer 1940
All eyes were on Scotland ... then a pretty Spanish girl walked by and said "going my way soldier?" The rest is history.
With Franco unwilling to join the Axis, the Axis decided we would join Franco..... in Madrid .... with guns. Two German Me-109 Squadrons quickly swept into Spanish airspace, hoping to catch the Spanish Air Force sleeping. Unfortunately the Spanish pilots had been drinking heavily the night before and were flying around playing wing tag. As a result the German planes destroyed the Spanish, but suffered damage to one German fighter squadron. Three Luftwaffe bombing squadrons follow up the attack and destroy a Spanish Artillery unit, yet sadly suffer damage to one bomber squad. German ground forces consisting of 2 infantry, 1 artillery and 5 Panzer groups crossed the frontier shortly afterwards and were met with heavy resistance. German forces managed to destroy 1 inf and 1 Flak unit and damage 2 other inf units, but suffer heavy losses again (1 panzer and 1 arty damaged). The Spanish are forced to retreat their remaining infantry to Gibraltar. The Italian navy was called in to deal with a Spanish light cruiser and was only able to damage the unit before it slipped away.
In Yugoslavia the German Wehrmacht attacked with 3 infantry and 2 artillery and suffered heavy losses of one inf and one artillery damaged. With Yugoslavia secured however, or Foreign Ministry was able to "pursuade" our Balkan allies to fully commit to the Axis cause. Hungary, Rumania and Bulgaria have now taken up their rightful place as partners with the great German people.
The Egyptian frontier was crossed by the Afrika Korps as well this summer and Cairo calls to us like it has called to many other great leaders and nations... The allies will have to make a very serious commitment indeed to defend Egypt. People of Egypt! Join us and throw off the yoke of your Colonial English masters.
Finally the wonderful story of U-35. Those brave, brave souls spent almost 3 months being hounded and doggedly pursued by 5 Royal Navy Cruisers. Although no casualties were suffered on either side, the Kriegsmarine considers the actions of the crew "heroic in scope" and has awarded the entire crew Iron Crosses. "The resources expended by the English in their futile and pathetic attempt to match German seamanship must have been tremendous" exclaimed Admiral Doenitz at the banquet being held in Brest tonight to honour the crew.
Side note - This turn was a tough one. Firstly I had to REALLY debate whether or not to try hitting Scotland. It would have been possible I think but very risky. I decided to stick with my plan and take Spain, Yugoslavia and put the pressure on in the Med. After my turn I almost thought I should have hit scotland[:(] German casualties for summer 1940 were extensive, however the objectives were complete and on the bright side nothing was destroyed. Still I had little production left for anything else.

Japan Summer 1940
Chinese forces retreated from the coast and prepared for invasion ....
Foochow was hit with 1 bomber and 3 infantry along with BB support and was taken.
Liuchow was hit with 1 bomber, 1 tac bomber, 1 paratrooper and 3 infantry and was taken.
Changsha was bombed by 1 Carrier Air Group and 1 fighter. Both defending militia were destroyed.
Kunming was bombed by 2 CAG, 1 tac bomber and 1 fighter, destroying 2 militia.
All Japanese battles were completed without any casualties ... "knock on wood" HEY!
I have been able to manage my supply well so far in Japan. I thought in this game I would leave my CV's in port and just use the CAG planes vs China. It has worked well so far and I have noticed the supply difference. I have also decided to focus on supply and some transports. I am determined to do the "mostest with the leastest".

Russia Summer 40
As Stalin waves the grain trains westward, he is overheard saying "The further away the Wehrmacht, the better!" Orders all Russian scientists to plush resort in Siberia, extolling them to come up with breakthroughs for Russia's ground forces...... or else.
(Builds for Russia are pretty evenly split between armor, inf, arty, and flak. I figure Russia has some time to research since the Axis will be delayed by their Spanish and Middle Eastern forays).
China Summer 40
All forces in Chungking. Waiting for supplies over the Burma road. Will Tojo allow this?
WA Summer 40
Wavell Retreats! Gen. Wavell, heavily outnumbered, retreats from Egypt to Ethiopia. "I will not see my boys slaughtered for no reason!" However, in a daring attack that was considered madness, the Royal Navy, sallied forth in the Eastern Med to sink an Italian convoy and screening battleships! (2 BB's, 2 DD's and a Ftr vs. 1BB and a Tran.. the combat calculator said 2.1 attacker loses, to .7 defender loses... I could not believe that, so I attacked anyway to sink the Italian BB and Tran, for 1 BB and 1 Ftr damaged).
The Rock is left open to conquest! British troops, and their recently acquired remnants of Spain military retreat to Spanish Morroco! Franco sets up government in exile in the Canaries under an umbrella of RAF fighters!
British Parlament calls for Churchill to resign, giving up so much, and so strategic, British territory without so much as a fight. Churchill's respone is unprintable.
Roosevelt sends supplies to India, earmarked for China.
(I am trying to keep Tyler contained, thinking Spanish Morroco, Ethiopia, and the Canaries, with air power, will do this. He can certainly take these spots with a bit of effort, but every turn, unit, and supply I can draw away from Russia is a plus. I guess I could fight it out, especially at Gib, but sometimes the threat is better than the execution, and it's hard to be a threat if you have NO forces because they fought losing battles. So far things look good, even with the lost production on Englands first turn.)

Germany Fall 1940
With the autumn leaves comes the changing of the season. The winds of change have blown across Europe and England seems to realize this. In a very gutsy move politically, the English have given up all our fall objectives without a shot being fired. Truly a wise move when facing the unstoppable German Wehrmacht, however, I am sure that Churchill is facing all kinds of opposition from proud and honourable MP's who wouldn't have given ground. I'm sure none of them have held a rifle either, but I digress.
Lead elements of the Afrika Korp were surprised when upon entering Cairo they were welcomed as liberators. German commanders have started working with local citisens to rot out any spies and English booby traps. Italian frogmen were sent off the coast of Alexandria to see if anything could be slavaged from our Naval defeat in the summer, but nothing could be done. The only action seen in Egypt was a German Stutka Squadron destroying an Allied miltia in Trans-Jordan.
Gibraltar is now a German rock and will protect the approaches to the Med. The Tommies retreated to Spanish Morocco and are now sitting and letting their spirits waver. Perhaps they will leave soon, if not I suppose we shall have to make them.
1 German fighter squadron and 1 U-boat attcked 2 allied transports just beyond the pillars of Hercules, but were only able to damage 1 transport.
Preparations were begun for the invasion of England and a massive Luftwaffe force was sent to the North Sea to clear out some allied ships and planes. Germany send 2 fighters, 2 tac bombers and 2 bombers vs a UK CV with CAG, 2 BB's a fighter and a light cruiser. The luftwaffe was soundly defeated and suffered damage to a fighter and tac bomber, while destroying the allied fighter squadron.
All in all a decent Fall, however we have not been able to cause the allies any real problem in the Atlantic and most of England's forces are intact.
(I think Monty made the right move by pulling his forces back. I would have MAYBE tried to defend Cairo, but it would have been a major gamble on his part. This is actually the first game I have ever invaded Spain. Under the current rules, I guess it seems like a no brainer, but I tend to be a fairly conservative player. This game could be shaping up to be a good one, but I am worried that I have suffered an awful lot of casualties.)

Japan Fall 1940
The Emperor decided another season of bombing chinese infrastructure was in order. With firm Japanese control of coastal China, many soldiers are wondering whats next? The Emperor has decreed that supply will be built up so that we may strike wherever and whenever we please. We have focused on supply, tech and transports (in that order). I am determined that the Japanese are going to show the world that they are the equal of any western power ... with the obvious exception of Canada.

RE: Monty vs Tyler PBEM AAR
I have just finished my Winter 41 and I will post my turn after Monty files his Fall40. I will use the time I have now to give a simple overview.
So far things have gone alright for the Axis I suppose. The Med has been relatively secured by the Italians with Suez and Gibralter under Axis control. Monty was smart in my opinion and fell back on both fronts. Gibraltar is far too expensive to defend if the Axis occupy Spain and doing so also tends to leave England vulnerable to a Sealion attempt. He has managed to keep a solid allied presence in Spanish Morroco and as well has set up a defensive position in Ethiopia. I know from personal experience that if those Axis fleets reach the Indian Ocean they can be a major headache, I don't care what the manual says.
I am now preparing for the Russian offensive and as usual I feel rushed and underprepared. This I suppose, is the major drawback to fighting hard for the Med. Still, I have every confidence that the German grunt will do his duty and fight with every ounce of his ability. I suppose my only real debate is whether to hit the Bolsheviks next turn in spring, even though I am not quite ready, or to delay until summer when I should have all in place. Right now I am leaning towards attacking in Spring, and reinforcing for a more determined summer offensive. I'll just need to ensure I have sufficient supplies available.
I haven't challenged Monty much in the Atlantic and we shall see shortly what is to happen on that front. I expect Doenitz will step up his pressure on the Atlantic convoys if we are to prevent the Allies from playing too "responsive" a role in the Eastern Front. Fortunately my sub fleet remains intact and ready.
Japan has been relatively quite so far, which I suppose, is to be expected. I have been bombing the Chinese and preparing for War. Many within the Japanese military are crying out for a suprise attack on the US, but I try to tell these voices in my head to shut up and have patience. China looks appealing as well, with all his forces cowering in the capital, the countryside is almost begging for Japanase protection. 1941 I'm sure will prove to be an important year in Japanses history however.
I think Monty has played the allies exceptionally well so far and has made few mistakes, beyond his 1st turn supply chain error. Not being an Axis expert by any means, I think I will be hard pressed to soundly defeat Monty. This one is going to go down to the wire I think. I just wish I knew how to post some screen shots...

In order to post a screenshot you have to put it up at a webspace and link the image here IIRC.

To post screenies, look at the bottom of the message page (ie where you type the message to post). There is a box to check ti embed a picture in the post called "Embed picture in post"[;)]
Then click on "Click here to upload". This will bring up a file search box. Go find your picture and select it. Wait for the OK then it should be in your post.
Hope that helps.[8D]

Ok, first off, thank you for the SS info. Perfect description. A poster on the other board told me a way to do it, but Barth's instructions are much easier... no posting to a seperate website. SS's of tech level, military units available and in construction, and of the map should be forthcoming.
My Fa40 turn was quite boring. Other than the RAF dropping some "Visit the Canaries" fliers on the occupation force in Gib, there was little to speak of. The RAF SHOULD have hit the Italian Sub - the +1 Fortress bonus makes the arty they were shooting for pretty tough. Her Majesty's Royal Eastern Med Fleet has been renamed HMR Arabian Sea fleet, hopefully protected by the arty guarding the straits of the Red Sea. I had no intention of letting Tyler run rampant towards India, prefering to keep my fleet, and units, in place to hit 4 spots - Palestine, Eygpt, Iraq, and, if nessecary, Saudi. I figure a small ANZAC force will tie down at least twice their numbers of Axis. Same with the Canaries and Spanish Morocco.. I don't think it's what I do, as much as what I CAN do. At least until this point. When Russia gets hammered (SPRING!!! - Stalin SHOT his KGB chief when he heard that news). Then Britain will have to s or get off the pot.
Not sure about how to defend China. I thought that with supplies from the WA, China could be a threat, but in a AI game, my chinese forces had a -4 modifier attacking Japanese forces. -4? Not sure why it is so high. I wonder if the way to go is to spread out the AA, build more, and use the WA supplies to keep the factories running. Occasionally, one of those AA will down a Betty.
I have CAG's, and DD's( I think) up to 2 in ASW. Hopefully, I can use 1,2 punch techniques to deal with the U-Boats. Anyone ever thought of taking Iceland and putting a strat or 2 there for this? Would a Strat ASW value of 1, against a Sub evasion of 3, not even fire, thereby not lower the subs evasion by 1 and softening it up?

This idea does not work now, but in the upcoming patch it will work very well. Good thinking.[8D]ORIGINAL: kinetic

Somebody has to have a chance to hit to activate the battle. Once a battle is activated, the unit will fire even if it can't hit. As for Op fire, it has to have a chance to hit to conduct Op-fire, IIRC.

Germany Winter 1941
With winter comes a soft blanket of snow laying across Germany ... er I mean Europe ... uuh check that, yes Germany. Action is quiet in Europe as men and equipment are moved across the landscape in preparation for what is next to come.
Where there is action however, there is German triumph. The government of Portugal refuses to allow German protection of their shores and is therefore swiftly incorperated into the greater German Riech. During this operation one German U-Boat and a fighter squadron sink one allied transport off the shores of Gibraltar, once again showing the Tommies that Europe is no place for them.
In Egypt, elements from Rommel's Afrika Korp cross the Suez and seize the rail lines of Trans-Jordan. Iraq and Lebanon are now both within Axis reach. Rommel ponder's what steps to take next, if any, against the retreated and demoralised Commonwealth forces.
In the Atlantic the High Command was getting restless and wanted Doenitz to do something, ANYTHING with his U-boat force. Since the exploits of U-35 the German effort at sea had been relatively quiet. So just to let the Brits know we were still around it was decided to send out a wolfpack. We sent out 4 U-boat squads on a hit and run off the west coast of Ireland vs 1 BB, 1 CL, and one transport. We managed to damage the Battleship and sliped away without casualties. This minor mission accomplished two important objectives. Firstly it improved moral in our submariners. Second it positioned our entire submarine fleet within easy hit and run distance of atlantic shipping in Brest and Gibraltar.
In this season I mainly consolidated what I had. I repaired most remaining damage within conquered territories and moved as many troops east as my rail network and supply would permit. I will have to take a very close look come spring to see if Barbarossa will be possible, or if like in history, Germany is forced to delay a move on the Soviets and strike in the Summer. I debated on whether or not to take Greece, and in the end I decided that if she becomes a necessary addition to Germany, than I can easily make this happen. Until then, the resources are needed elsewhere.

Japan Winter 1941
The Japanese sent in 2 CAG, 2 Bombers, 2 fighters and 1 tac bomber. One Chinese infantry unit was damaged and the defending Chinese fighter squadron was completely decimated. The Chinese defenders fought valiantly however and 1 CAG and both fighter squadrons were damaged in the raid.
Elsewhere supplies and equipment continue to be placed and prepared to achieve the will of the Emperor...
Chunkiang (AP)- The horrible ravages of war are now a very harsh reality to the citizens of Chungkiang today as the largest air attack in Asian history was carried out by the Japanese. Hundreds of planes pounded the city mercilessly for hours in an attempt to break the spirit of her occupants. Fortunately no fictional civilians were killed (in which case some silly twit surely would have protested) however, Chinese miltary targets were damaged in the massive raid.

Russian Turn Winter 41
Yes that's right, with 6 German Armor, a BB, and several Strat's and a Tac within range of Leningrad, I believe it is unholdable. I considered building militia in it, but I believe that would have been a waste (it has 1 Arty and 1 Inf over starting forces) I would welcome any input on this decision. However, if Tyler attacks the USSR this turn, I believe I can hold the Caucuses. Small bit of good news. Looking at 2 years of Germany pounding on Rus is scary though.
I hope to do a "Tech" comparision maybe next turn, but Russia is staying very close on tank tech, and has gotten their arty GA tech to 7. Hopefully, the Queen of the Battlefield will cause massive German casualties.
Moscow (Pravda) - V.N. Merkulov, Director of the NKGB, was found yesterday in the Moskva River, bound, gagged, weighted down with concrete blocks, and shot three times in the head. This was shortly after he privately met with Comrade Stalin, expressing his views of the probability of a Spring 1941 attack by the Whermacht. His death has been ruled a suicide.
Moscow (Pravda) Comrade Stalin addressed the Politburo today. He reassured the country that the masses of German armorpresent in Prussia was due to the fact that the Wehrmacht's maintenance depot was located there. This fact was heartly confirmed by Ribbentrop.
Leningrad (Pravda) The General staff of the Northern People's Army has relocated their HQ to Georgia. When asked about this move (which took less than 24 hours), General Getoutski Oftownski replied "um.. Leningrad is so cold this time of year."
