Who upgrades from F4F-3 to F4f-4

For Carrier squadron
Is the increased firepower guns(18-12) and bombs worth decreased climb (2200 vs 1950) and mnvr (33-32). Also I have seen when checking out aircraft data in a squadron listing F-4F -4 bomb load of 2- 100 lb instead of 2-250 lb.

It's not the performance, it's the number of replacement aircraft that's important. You have no choice.

In case you're interested, despite my strong disagreement with many of the final design decisions about aircraft performance characteristics (including that crucial one-performance-point screwing of the F4F-4 and drastic reduction in its climb rate from the -3 model), I do not use the editor to create my own little fantasy world where my problems just go *poof* and disappear.

My idea of wargaming on the level of command ostensibly provided by a game like WitP is to step into the role of the historical commander, accept the defined conditions built into the game design, point my battalions in the right direction, and shove off.

Pity that this has turned into the "WWII in the Pacific Wargame Construction Set."

Guns are good, they kill Japanese

I keep a few F4F-3 around to enlarge my replacement pool. In the great scheme of things there is not enough difference between the two for it to matter.

What was most important about the varient is what you do not see in WitP
The F-4 had folding wings which made storing and moving the aircraft about on the carrier alot easier.
They also took up less space above and below deck so more could be kept on the deck and extra things like fuel and bombs etc. could be stored below deck.

I keep the F4F-3's in the VMF squadrons for awhile. If anyone is going to see some continual combat in the opening months, it'll be these guys.

Let the 4's build up in the replacement pool for your CV's. You always want to have enough fighters for your CV groups to replace their losses quickly.

Actually, you do see it in WitP, built into the automatic expansion of fighter group size from 27 to 36 (although this is not tied exactly to the type of fighter aircraft actually present on the CV).

Of course, some of our fellow players are not satisfied with evolution and prefer to inject their creationist beliefs by shoving more fighter groups onto carriers and then complaining when they don't fly because now you have 186 planes on the thing.

I am not sure, but I believe these players are from Kansas.

I thought the expansion was more due to the changing doctrine of the US Navy than different aircraft.
Or perhaps it was both.

In any case upgrading makes sense since only about 115 F-3's were produced compared to 11 times that many F-4's
The US Navy found it to be a better plane and that is good enough for me.

Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.
