Population gotcha

Post by Dragol »

I invaded Scotland and my opponents population in England went up allowing him to spit out many more units per turn. Can anyone explain the details and rationale for this? There seem to be numerous undocumented or obscurely-documented features like this, such that many consequences of invasion are hidden to the player. It would be nice if warning windows popped up (like the op-fire warning) whenever a player attempted an invasion or movement with hidden consequences; e.g., invading inland China, losing gifts, population increases, militia creation, etc.

The population rating should not increase in England. However, some of the population already in the population pool in Scotland may flee to England (it's somewhere in the manual). In the long run however you have reduced ongoing popualation generation by taking Scotland. The other thing that can cause population to increase is that whenever a damaged unit goes back to a factory, it adds 1 population to the area. That's because it will cost 2 population points to complete the repair of the unit and only 1/2 of the population in a damaged unit is considered destroyed.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Yes it is in the manual :) that half the Pop Pool goes to a safe place (if possible)
And yup, the damaged units not only add to Pop, but Inf, Arty and Flak are repaired the very next turn. So it's entirely possible for England to sprout 4-5 'extra' units after an invasion of Scotland.
It might be nice to get a warning when attacking a Major Power, lol! We get one for Minors :) or at least for Frozen Zones, like Panama, which isn't listed but un-freezes everything!
