Activity?

Post by Wolfar100 »

I have War in the Pacific and Uncommon Valor. I have been on the fence about this one and I peek in from time to time. I have noticed that this form is not very active. Is it because this game has does not appeal to the hard core gamer? Or is it because this game just is not that grand?

All opinions welcome. Push me off the fence or jump back to the safe side? [&o]

This game is brilliant - Easy to start but very difficult to master. With the coming addition of tcp/ip play how can you go wrong?

I see more positive than negative about the game. The lack of form activity says allot though also. [&:]

Wolfar,

Maybe we're all to busy playing, rather than posting.

Wolfar,

Thought of that also. Then I also frequent the SubSim form for SHIII which also has no multiplayer. It is constantly alive with postings. Also noted that WITP form is alive and very active. So I am thus concerned is all. [;)]

My guess is that since the game is more abstract, there's less detail to discuss. Games like SH3 and WitP are either tactical or grand-tactical which gives people lots of things to discuss. GGWaW is more like a more realistic Axis & Allies, so you don't spend your time talking about the nuts and bolts of weapons, etc. The game is also simpler and much quicker to play, so you spend more time playing and less time analyzing. As players get more experience, there have been some good posts regarding strategies, etc., and when we add Online Play I expect that will heat up even more. I think a lot of the players find GGWaW more fun to play (especially against other players) then to talk about (except with the people they are playing with. At least I hope that's the case. I know it's sold more than WitP, but much less than SH3 (which is a mainstream big budget Sim), for whatever that's worth (in my old job I worked on SH1, and really liked it).
All understanding comes after the fact.

I just downloaded it this week. I needed a break from the all-consuming WITP. I'd suggest you start as the Soviet Union
and leave production on AUTO at first, just to get a feel for the
combat & movement systems. I've finished the whole war in 3-4
hours. It moves much faster with the combat animations turned off.

Thank you all for your responses. Joel, you gave a very good explination and being a gonard of both mentioned sims I am a hair breath away from jumping on this one. I liked Axis and Allies both in the board version and call me crazy the PC versions. I had Axis and Allies orginal PC version and Iron Blitz. I also own Atari's latest verion of Axis and Allies. I would consider the later more of command and conquer format.

I started with W@W and recently bought WitP. I have to warn people that the level of detail in WitP is overwhelming and like others have said, W@W is more abstract.

I believe part of the explaination for forum activity is due to actually playing the game. I'm a big fan of W@W, but due to playing 3-4 games at once, playing the game limits me on what else I feel like doing on the computer when not doing a turn. Therefore I mostly post here while at work (today I'm waiting for my wife to get ready to go to the store).

I think anyone who enjoyed Axis&Allies will love this game, but if you're a grognard through and through you probably won't enjoy it.

Good choice. I only picked this game up as a stop-gap until my beloved Hearts of Iron II is fully patched & modded.

I regard it now as one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. It's simplicity masks elegance & fine balance.

I only had about 10 minutes with the game before leaving for work. I fired it up and noticed that England shows USA forces in it with the USA star in 1939 I think it was. This struck me as strange. I will look more at it when I get home. [&:]

You can select to use UK Icons in the preferences section. About that "US Star" though; I am a Canadian who went to Normandy last year for the 60th Anniversary Ceremonies. I noticed pictures of a number of Canadian and British vehicles with the " US Star" on them and mentioned this to some of the Vets. They were surprised I was refering to this as a US Star and said most Allied Vehicles (including Candian and British tanks) had this star on them so they could be easily distinguished by friendly aircraft. They considered it more of an "Allied Star" than a US Star. Certainly American aircraft used this star while Canadianand British aircraft did not. Does anyone else know more about this?

As for the game, if you like Strategic Command you will enjoy this game.

Considering myself a very avid history buff that lives on the history channel I seem to have overlooked the Allied Star. [&:] That is very cool about you going to Normandy! [&o]

All Allied ground vehicles were painted with the white star for Normandy, in the same way that Allied aircraft were painted with "Invasion Stripes".

The star fell rapidly out of favour when the Germans started using it to aim at...

hahaha, I suppose you're joking.

interesting observation about the star, I guess I never really paid much attention to the ground unit insignia. looking quickly through a few of my books, I can't seem to see any insignia on the british tanks at all! unfortunately the majority of my books are boxed up at the moment.

Actually it is not a joke, Allied forces used oil, dirt or any other material to remove the white star from the side of the APC tank etc.

The White Star was used by all allied forces after late 1943. It was however considered the American Star.

On another note do not rely too much on the History Channel, they are wrong as often as they are correct in their "entertainment".

I suppose a few crews might do this, but I've seen too many pictures from 1944+ that have clearly marked insigna to think this was widespread. I've even seen pictures of german tanks with fake star insignia used during the battle of the bulge.

where did you guys read that they tried to get rid of their insignia? I thought a very detailed book on tanks was "death traps" by cooper and he never mentioned this being done (as I recall, its been a couple years since I've read it).

Actually, I never said that the star was officially discontinued, just that individual crews here and there obscured and/or removed them. I think I would have done the same if I'd been riding around in a Sherman tank, knowing that any German with a rifle could make my vehicle burst into flame with a single shot.

Any German with a rifle? Do you mean Panzerfaust?
