Hi,

Those two are actually armed merchant cruisers. Japan had quite a few as they tended to follow British patterns in the inter war period.
Those two ships were supposed to interdict Allied shipping in the south seas.

The Bankok Maru mine layers are also armed merchant cruisers but they carried mines so we made them mine layers.

I wish they had included 'AMC' or 'MX' as a class choice but Matrix included so much already, we can't have everything.
So we did the best we could coming up with classes for these ships to be in.

Hope you enjoy the game,

Mike

Wait 'till you see the next turn. Historically these two Japanese AMCs sank the merchant ship Vincent near Pitcairn Island on December 12th, 1941. Considering the difficulty with a mid-ocean intercept, we went for the first day.

Take a look at: Merchant Ship Losses and you'll see a lot of ships whose names a WITP player might recognize.

Noticed these ships seemed exactly alike except for one thing:

One has float planes and the other doesnt. Are these not the same class of ship and why does one get jipped??? [:)]

The problem is how the ships are typed in WITP. The Japanese (and other country's) AMCs were modified ocean liners that could do some or all of:[ol]
[*] Engage in Surface Action
[*] Carry Float Planes
[*] Transport Troops
[*] Lay Mines
[/ol]

During the course of the war, most AMCs (Japan's and others) were converted out of the AMC role - usually to transports.

In WITP, items 2, 3, and (partially) 4 are mutually exclusive. A ship may be either:
  • a Warship (can operate aircraft)
  • a Transport (can carry troops)
  • a Minelayer (can also operate aircraft but only carry troops in "fast transport" TF)

After reviewing the histories of the Japanese AMCs we made three classes:
[ol]
[*] 129 - Bangkok Maru (AMC) - three minelaying units that convert to transports
[*] 169 - Aikoku Maru (AMC) - seven transport units that convert to full transports (some used as transports in initial operations).
[*] 725 - Aikoku Maru (AMC) - four PG units that also convert to full transports - only these four can operate aircraft.
[/ol]

The four units rated as PG were those that were never historically converted to transports (primarily due to loss - if they survice they can be converted in CHS). They are also the units that historically engaged in well known surface actions - against the Vincent, the Bengal and Ondina, and during the Indian Ocean raids.
