CHS vs Japanese AI

Post by Don Bowen »

I am playing a (modified) CHS scenario against Japanese AI - and it is working great! Any prior problems with CHS/AI seem to be gone!

I don't know if there were any AI improvements in V1.6 but the AI seems more "I". It uses it's aircraft better (moves them forward in support), is very aggressive, and is giving a challenging game so far. My test runs show the AI still sending under-escorted task forces into the Singapore area before the British air units there are properly suppressed - an old problem - but all in all I am pleased.

All submarine actions (about 10) have gone the Japanese way, with several allied submarines damaged (none fatally) and a number of merchants sunk. Lots of submarine sighting by aircraft but only one damaged (allied).

The Pearl Harbor attack results were about standard but I do have a "cheat" in my personal version of CHS. The three ships that were permanently lost at Pearl (Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah) are set with 50% flotation damage at the start of the scenario. Damaged ships seem to attract more attention and I usually get all three sunk or nearly so (OK - I did scuttle one but I wanted historical results). One time out of three test runs the Japanese Pearl Harbor attack force moved to the West of Pearl and attacked shipping there and little Ryujo is the terror of the Sulu Sea - decimating local shipping in the Visayas.

For those who play against the Japanese AI: it works - go for it! I'd appreciate any feedback from players who play against the Allied AI.

I can vouch for it's working. I'm up to 12-23-41. I sent Enterprise straight south at Full speed and KB headed a little south of west and caught her at extreme range.

Pearl Harbor saw only Utah sunk, but the level of damage to all BBs except for Tennessee is very high.

Never thought of scuttling ships to make it closer to real.

I'd have to say CHS has made this my all-time favorite. Quite an accomplishment with how many hours I've spent on Red Baron in all it's incarnations.

Great job guys.

I'd like to know if people have any luck playing CHS against Allied AI. It was my impression that it didn't work very well.

We made some changes in the latest release of CHS to provide a restricted HQ for India. There is some question how an Allied AI will handle that. Love to hear from anyone that has tried it.

One of the reasons I made scenario 154 is to try to make the Allied AI work more effectively (without the extra bases in Middle East and Panama). I suggest using scenario 154 if you want to play CHS vs the Allied AI.

I have just switched over to CHS and am very impressed with it. I’m running a modified CHS campaign against the Japanese AI and am really enjoying myself.

As a side note does anyone else modify the Arizona, Oklahoma and Utah to 50% damage for the start of the campaign? This way I get a result similar to the real thing and the AI gets the points for the sunk ships. (Even doing this I have had times that they did not sink…)
One other modification I do is add myself as a pilot in the Flying Tigers. (I know, pure ego, but it is fun to see how well my twin does)

I have also added myself and a few friends as pilots as well.

Sounds like you guys should make scenario 154 the Human vs AI scenario and leave out the Indian HQ change here...

...and maybe even this version without any of the additional bases the AI isnt programmed to use...
