SAV file won't load

Post by jhdeerslayer »

I was doing the "tutorial" and saved have way through. I tried to load it a day latter and all I got was the hour glass and no response for ten minutes at which point I Ended Task. It's repeatable on my machine anyway. I restarted a fresh game and so far no issues but I will try again soon.

Anybody interested in this SAV?

My System:

XP SP2
1.7Mhz
512k RAM
9600 XT
Audigy ZS

Yes, please upload it here or send it to my account at ericbabe@west-civ.com. If you send it to me, please zip it first, otherwise it crashes my email program if I click on the message. Please send both the .sve and .rep files.

We haven't really had any reports of save games not restoring, so far at least. Can you save/load other games?

Thanks for the report.

I had this happen last night on a PBEM game. Hourglass just sat there. When I finally went to kill it using Task Manager, Alt-Tab showed there were two dialog boxes hidden behind the main menu screen that I could not get to come to the foreground. One of those boxes was titled "Problem:" in the alt-tab window. Selecting it would NOT bring it forward, and when I told Task Manager (which would not come forward either) to kill the application by hitting Alt-E, it said this application is waiting for your input.

I never could see what the "Problem:" window said.

Eric - I will send to you within a day.

I restarted another fresh game to finish the tutorial and have one Save/Load cycle under my belt. I will know more soon.

Like the looks of this game by the way and the detail too.

Eric - This may help you.

I noticed on two different PC's I have COG installed on that the first Save As on a fresh install it brings up the My Documents Folder as the default Save location and not the Matrix directory. It then appeared (if memory serves me) to create a mirror image 0 byte file in the Matrix Sav and put the actual file in My Documents. I didn't troubleshoot and document this all well but my recollection.

I noticed this when I started my first game on my work [;)] PC and when I Saved As it brought up My Documents and then I changed it manually to Matrix Sav Folder. This much I saw for sure and the file I sent you a few dqys ago I got out of My Documents from home PC but didn't think anything about it at the time. I never caught this on my home PC when I first flagged this so maybe this is related to the issue. The Sav I sent you may work fine then but was just in the wrong location and COG was trying to load the 0 byte file from Matric Sav.

Sorry for my convoluted story here but maybe there is something here to help you and others.

All future Sav's are OK once they get in the correct Folder.

Fascinating! I wonder if this is a Windows setting or something. I use a standard call to get the file-chooser gizmo from the Windows libraries. It does seem there is a problem with the error dialog getting hidden behind the main game window sometimes.

When you say this is exactly what is happening with PBEM problem do you mean that you were trying to load the file from the wrong location as deerslayer wrote above in this quote:

Eric:

No...sorry for the misleading comment....the symptons were the same in terms of the load which nbever completes, etc.. As referenced seprately, my prohblems originate from a normal load attempt from the PBEM folder. Have dupliacted it on a second system of my own as well.
