Questions from the new guy

Post by teeman11 »

Just finished my first complete game yesterday and I have a few questions.

1. Carriers, it seemed like the WA fleets cold kill all of my CAG's with ease. They would move over lauch thier air and all of my air would get damaged. I looked at the tech, don't remeber the exact numbers but it was like they were way ahead of me(japan) or anything. What gives?

2. Can planes it inf? whenever I tried to send some bombers or tac bombers against a group of inf the analyzer would say no(or next to no) loses for either side.

3. Why do my chances of loses increase when I send Art along with my Inf? For example, I send in 5 Inf and the loses are say 2.5 but when I add the 1 Art to that gruop it jumps to like 4.

4. why do subs sometimes take Opp five when going thru a norrow and other times they don't?

5. Why don't factories add up right? If you look at the number of facts on the strat map and they add them up, either on the map or in the regional info they aren't the same. I was trying to figure it out at the end of the game and couldn't so I restarted the game from the begin and checked it then and it still didn't add up. For example, the Strat map say Germany starts with 19 Facts but if you add them up on the map there are only 17. Same with Japan, I think the Strat shows 9 but there are only 8. What gives?

I'm sure there is more but I can't think of them right now, I'll add them later. Thanx in advance for you help.

4. Depends on what enemy has on land areas adjacent to narrows. If he has air, subs suck opfire from air unit, if he has no air, subs will not be subjected to opfire.

5. I am not sure I understand your question but will try to answer nevertheless [:)]. You have to keep in mind strategic map (F9) does not show "number of factories", it shows your "production points" (PP). When you "pair" (or match) one factory point with one resource you get one PP.

Thus, Japanese start with 8 factories. They have factory multiplier of x3, which gives them 24 factory points. But, they do not have enough resources. If they have only 9 resources, they would have 9 production points (PPs), which is what they have at start.

They have *potential* for 24 PPs (if they capture or build new factories then they have potential for even more) but they would have to capture 15 more resources to actually make it happen.

I think the Strat page[F9] shows the actually number of factories, atleast that's what it says in the book(p.97) but if you go to the Regional info page[F10] and add up the number of factories they don't match. For Germany's first turn the [F9] shows 19 but [F10] shows only 17.

Oleg is correct. Strat map shows the production level you are at, which is 1 factory point (accounting for factory multipliers) plus 1 resource center that is not isolated = 1 production point.

Is that Resource Center or Resource Point, because you could have more points in the Resource pool than you total resource centers right? Which would give you more Production points? I don't know, I'm throughly confused now. I'll have to look at it again when I get home.

Any help on those other questions?

Resource centers for the strat screen which is only important for victory points. Basically it's a snapshot of your potential production, not accounting for any stored resources or free trade.

As for your questions:

1) May be due to research by the other side, may be bad luck. Also, are you using the latest patch (1.040)? In earlier versions the Allied heavy fleet flak rating was higher than it is now.

2) Generally, aircraft that start with 5 dice ground attack will will only 6% of the time hit a good 6 evasion infantry (however they have a 30% chance against a 5 evasion infantry or a 6 evasion infantry that has already been attacked during the current turn). You need to research up the ground attack value of your aircraft. Aircraft are good at hitting artillery which have weaker defenses (they have a 50% chance against a 6 evade artillery unit). Air is good at softening up infantry for a land assualt on the same turn or hitting artillery.

3) Because artillery fires first at range 2 and softens up the target for other units that attack the target in the same turn. Artillery then fires again at range 1.

4) As Oleg said, it depends on the ASW of the artillery and air that are in the area covering the narrows. If they have low ASW values against higher level evasion subs, they can't hit. Artillery has no ASW IIRC.

You have to pay attention to the Evasion and Air attack numbers. In general land based fighters will shoot down naval fighters pretty much "automatically" until your naal air evasion is up to 6 or 7. Naval air needs air attack of 6 or so to have a chacne against land based fighters. The key to using carrier air is to use it to attack ships with no air cover from an area (or two if you have the range) away and then skeedadle.
2. Can planes it inf? whenever I tried to send some bombers or tac bombers against a group of inf the analyzer would say no(or next to no) loses for either side.

Tac and heavy bombers with land attack of 5 can kill inf - militia in particular - early on, but you need to up the ground attack to 6 or 7 (or more) later in teh game to have a chance. Remember that attacking with a fighter with ZERO chacne still reduces teh evaision making it easier for other units to attack.
3. Why do my chances of loses increase when I send Art along with my Inf? For example, I send in 5 Inf and the loses are say 2.5 but when I add the 1 Art to that gruop it jumps to like 4.

Arty has lower evasion, so its more likely to be hit if shot at, upping the average kills. If the defender has arty, then it ALWAYS shoots at your arty and pretty much "cancels it out" causing a couple extra "automatic casualties' that you don't get with all infantry.

Thanks for all the help.

Now that I have the game up infront of me I see what's going on. Germany starts with 17 factorys but has and factory output of 31 due to the multiplier. It also starts with 22 resource centers but 3 or unlinked which drops it to 19. Then when you go to the build screen you actually have 23 resources points, because you get a gift of 3 and another 1 from trade, which means you have a total of 23 production points to build with. So, you have Factory output from the Start page of 19, you have a factory output from the regional info page of 31, and you have and actually production output of 23. I got now, just a little confusing. I guess the FO from the region page is the physical output(factories x mulitplier) were as the FO from the strat page is theoritical output(without gifts, trade, or leftover resources from last turn)
