1100 Hours
The X SS Panzer has been relieved and we are there replacements.We have been assigned the task of breaking the Poles here at Krakow. If we are successful today it should end the conflict.
Our starting time to begin the assault is 1100 hours. There is a very heavy thunderstorm raging but visability is still near 1300 yards. As we expect to run into mine fields all along our front extra Engineers have been sent by Head Quarters. All three companys will have an extra company of Engineers out in front of the advance. This is good news to all of us as the faster thru the field the quicker this battle will be over.
Co B will advance east using a road to the mine field. It is about 600 yards to field which is 200 yards north of town. Once thru field they will advance to a small hill that lies 600 yards beyond. Objective is behind this hill. Once secured they will move south 200 yards to northern edge of the town and help A Co take it.
C Co in the very south is to move east thru mine field and take a small hill that lies south west of town 300 yards. There objective is 500 yards south east of this hill. One platoon plus platoon of medium tanks will secure the objective. Two platoons will swing north east to south edge of town and help A there. Once the platoon of tanks and infantry have there area secure they will swing north east to the rear of the town and surround any enemy that is left in the town alive.
A Co is to move along a road that runs right up to the center of town. The town lies 600 yards past the mine field. Once they have reached the edge of the town they are to spread out and begin the task of house to house search for the enemy. Two platoons of support tanks are moving with them towards the town. Once the infantry moves into the first row of houses the tanks will move north and south around it. They are to assist C and B as they move up to the north and south sides.
Our bombardment began at 1100 hours of suspected enemy emplacements and the mine field. This will go on for 15 minutes as our Engineers move up. After this they will randomly pick locations in a search for any Polish troops. Fifteen minutes before our troops reach the edge of town all hell will be left loose on the town it self.
If all goes well today Poland will be ours.

Things are not going well for us today. Already there is problems with the Engineers on the roads. A few squads are moving towards the mines but most are hugging the ground and refuse to budge. This has caused a massive road jam. The ones that have gotten to with in 100 yards of the field are pinned down. Maybe two squads have actually reached the field and begun to remove the mines. One I belive in the center and one on the left flank. The problem is compounded by the fact it is a double row of mines.
The trouble started when the Poles opened up with a massive bombardment from those blasted 100 mm guns. They struck our far right flank in the south first. It lasted for 10 minutes till the Engineers there were turned into a mass of jelly. Then moved to the far left flank in the north. At present it is pounding our middle into another mass of jelly. I have finally gotten the south and some of the north on the move again. This was after a lot of threats and boots in the butt. I am so glad Head Quarters saw fit to spare us all the extra Engineers for todays battle.
Smoke has been called down on all three fronts. Has been falling for the last 25 minutes just behind the mine fields. I dont know how they can see us to take pot shots. We have not been able to spot where the fire is coming from so we can return it. One of our 150 must have hit some thing a while ago as we were able to see a big fire ball whan it hit.
This is not going to be easy at all today. The enemy is well dug in and hidden even better. They knew we were coming and prepared well. The Engineers have already lost at least 20 men from the last report I had. I wish we knew where those 100mm were firing from. Id blast them to kingdom come thats for sure. Would love to have had some rear area help in this battle. If for nothing else but harrass those guns.

Lots of problems today getting thru the mine field. Smoke has cut down on the small arm fire some what. But the heavy 100mm fire we are recieving has all but stopped the Engineers in there tracks. At least some of the squads have reached and removed some of the mines. There has been no break thru any where at all. The mine field is a double lane extending all the way along our front. From the last report I got from all fronts reporting at least 100 mines have been removed.
Sent a order to all companys to find and send all of the old sgts from WWI out to kick some Engineers butts into gear. At least they have the experience at getting the men out of the trenches from the big war. Those big hob nailed boots they wear have to be good for something.
Have told the 150 to search for some of those pesky mortars that keep harrassing our troops as well. I must admit we are stalled right at the moment but we will begin to move very soon. When we do I would hate to be a Pole today in front of us. We can expect our losses to be high today. The Poles are fighting for there very excistence and the life of there country.

The Engineers on the north flank have managed to open a 100 yard wide lane threw the mine field. Our men have begun to move thru the gap and advance toward the enemy in front of them.
The center also has a 100 yard wide gap in the mine field. They too are moving up on the road thru this lane. They will spread out in company formation as they move towards the outskirts of the city.
The south has managed to open a fifty yard wide hole in the mine field. One platoon has begun to move thru in single file. They were held up in the south due to the horrendus fire from the enemys 100mm guns.
At least 100 men have been killed from the ranks of the Engineers. Of the 100 only maybe five have been killed from small arm fire. So far only one 6/2 AA and a truck have been taken out by this unrelenting fire. A couple of Pzks have taken slight damage again from the 100mm fire.
One PzVI had a close call from a 50mm mortar about 10 minutes ago. The commander had his top open on the turret of his tank. He was talking to a spotter who was helping direct the tanks fire. He was just closing the top down when a mortar shell hit the slope and sort of ran down the cover and hit the rear deck. There was no damage done and the cover actually shielded the commander from the blast. I have given him the opportunity to take a few minutes to clean up.
A few of the Engineers have been killed while clearing the mines. I think this was not there fault but was due to there eagerness to get our troops thru the fields. Some of them just went too fast for there own good. It is slow going but we are moving again. For some reason about 30 minutes ago the 100s slacked up for about 20 minutes. This gave our officers and non coms time to get more of the Engineers into the field and working. Sorry to say but they have once again began to bombard us.

A victory here today is doubtful. The constant harrassment by the enemys artty has all but shut down my force. Only the iron will of our officers and non coms have kept the troops from complete rout. They have already shot two men for coweradice. The boot has been used way too much today. It is the only way to get some of the men to move forward.
This battle has raged for two hours and the ground we have taken has been paid for in blood. It seems that no matter how many of the enemy that goes down more pop back up. At least 3 full squads of engineers have died trying to get thru the fields. Lost a squad of regulers to a squad of troopers few minutes back before we could locate and eliminate them. A Pz IIc blew up in what we thought was a clear area of the field. Movement is in 50 yards at a time. Smoke is so heavy you cant see your hand in front of your face. This dam thunder storm further complicates movement.
We are thru the field and pushing the enemy back 50 yards at a time. The Poles are fanatical in there defense. One to three men squads holding out to the last man. The closest objectives are still at least 500 yards away from our leading edges. We have lost at least 200 men and this count may turn out even higher. Every five minutes at least 5 more men are killed by there 100mm guns. Also the trouble we are having spotting the Poles add to our losses. We have to be right on top before we see them. By then some of our men have been killed. This all adds up to a lot of very depressed and scared men.
Right now at the present time we have yet to get a full company thru the wire. The Engineers did a great job under some very adverse conditions. They were able to open 150 yard wide avenues thru all mine fields. But the congestion by forward units caused a massive back up. I am still pushing the men and hope to turn this battle around yet today.

I dont know how we managed to do it but we fought them to a draw. They were well concealed and very hard to spot. Had to dig them out of there holes. There were no prisoners taken today. Every enemy that was sighted had to be killed to the last man. Lot of the time we were assaulted by only one and two men at a time. Even those had to be attacked and killed before they would give up. It was a last ditch defense of there home land and they made us pay today.
Ran into several bunkers as we approched the objectives. Took out seven of these before we got the north and center targets. No bunkers were seen in the south. But had to go thru 3 companys of troops before they were captured by us. Not much in the way of armor on there side. Ran into a few Wiz 37mm cars that did not give us much trouble tho. Lots of anti tank rifles used by the poles today. They managed to give us more trouble then any thing else.
The biggest trouble was the 100mm guns raining down on us most of the battle. The depression caused by them was what held us up the most. Could hardly make the men get up from the ground and move forward. Let alone the hugh losss of life caused by them the congestion slowed our progress down to a snails pace.
Our losses today compared to the enemys:
Men 419 friends lost today
Lost 3 transport one truck and 2 recon
11 tanks were tore apart by ATR mostly. 4 were Pz38t which will be replaced by PzIIIe we hear
also lost 3 PzIVc to be replaced by PzIVd as well. Rest were PzIIc. All true friends and tankers.
They took with them 1493 of the enemy plus 10 of there artty and 4 of those wiz things. Also took out 7 bunkers and there crews as well. We hear Poland will sign the documents to turn over the country to Germany with in the week. Our efforts today im sure made this happen quicker. Maybe the loss of life did have something to do with ending this war. I hope so.
Just got word a few minutes ago. We are to be transported back to Berlin by rail starting later today. We are to rest get replacements and some new equipment. Then we are to start training for an invasion of France early next year. The word is that the French are massing men and equipment along our borders. I cant understand why the rest of the world wont let us live in peace. Hitler said in a speech yesterday that he wont allow these aggressors to scare us or hinder Germanys place in the world. I only hope he has his facts straight and knows what he is doing. Im begining to think this war will last for quite some time.
