I give up
maybe once the patch comes out, or they decide to post the info we have been asking for and they have said they are going to give us, I quit
my people are dieing from lack of food
go to one screen, and I am making 350 food, go to the next city and I am making 332, put more people to work on the farm and I am making 330 food
WHAT IS IT
how can we play a game with no idea on what we got going on ?
I think you got a great game, but it got to work the way it is suppost to
get a side to become your Ally, why, they just going to break it the next turn
also, would be nice if the AI played like it was 7 different sides, instead of all one
later gaters

RE: I give up
Provincial income has a random component. Eg: If you have labor allocation and modifiers such that a province produce 5.4 food then this means the province has a 40% of producing 6 food; a 60% (=6-5.4) chance of producing 5 food.
get a side to become your Ally, why, they just going to break it the next turn
The reason depends on the circumstances, I would imagine.
also, would be nice if the AI played like it was 7 different sides, instead of all one
I added this code in response to beta testers who were complaining that the AI wasn't cooperating well enough against players who were winning.

RE: I give up
Well thanks for the reply
still, we need better info on what is going on, if the reports are telling me I am making more food then I need, and then I lose 9 POP because I am not making enough food, something is wrong (enemy not interfering)
I think you may of went overboard with the new code, you don't do anything and you are fighting 6 different sides
what I don't like, is the dumb way they join each other, Aus and Turkey are at war, Aus is getting it's butt kicked, then next month, both sides declare war on me, along with Russia and Prussia, while still being at war with each other
a month later, I knock Aus out of the war, before Turkey can finish there own war with them
I am also not sure about the Alliances, every one I have entered, has not lasted too long
I am at war with all the sides that Sweden is at war with, and I am the only winning the war for them, and they break the alliance
most Alliances you make, you have to force on them, and even when you get so called locks on them, they still break them
current game, I forced Spain into being my Allied (enforce peace for 5 years, I defend them) during the middle of that time, they break the Alliances, which would not be too bad, but they got about 7 Armies out of there homeland, chasing all over Eruope, if I enforce my borders, Spain is going to be in trouble
which have to say, they have been pretty smart, they are using my armies as a shield and then picking on the open or weak areas behind me, but why break off the Alliance

I understand your frustration. While in concept and broad execution this is a wonderful game it does have some serious problems in its detailed execution; no point in listing them here, they are comprehensively documented by the members of this board.
I have left the game aside to wait to see the direction it goes in the longer term - given our understanding of the scope of the first patch and the fast timescale that it is being built to it cannot be anything other than a band-aid. The third/fourth patch and 6-9 months seems to be a more likely schedule before this can be played in anything other than "semi-play semi-test" mode - assuming that the patches don't introduce new problems.
But don't get me wrong - I am glad I bought it and supported it; getting a game of this potential to the level it's currently at is an achievement on the part of the team that developed and tested it and I am looking forward to playing it.

RE: I give up
I think this has been mentioned elsewhere, and will be changed--IIRC, the new rule will be, can't declare war on someone your enemy is at war with. But I might have this wrong.Aus and Turkey are at war, Aus is getting it's butt kicked, then next month, both sides declare war on me, along with Russia and Prussia, while still being at war with each other
a month later, I knock Aus out of the war, before Turkey can finish there own war with them
I don't know how the AI handles alliances--maybe Eric can fill in the details.most Alliances you make, you have to force on them, and even when you get so called locks on them, they still break them
RE: I give up
I still keep playing the game, albeit often fooled to believe what AI is trying to predict. (I had in a game 200 golds in coffer with AI "telling" me I could earn more than enough to pay the bills for the current turn, but I yet had to suffered from a depleted treasury at the start of the coming month.) I started to find myself just as unreliable to do a good job of playing as all AI's estimates. :p

Hi Naomi
don't get me wrong, I love this game very much, just was/am getting feed up trying to figure out what I am doing, when the info that I should be useing (and other things) tell me different things on different screens, so you don't know which one you should be reading to get an idea on
plus waiting on some of the patch stuff to come out

I can understand his frustration though....I am about fed up with the constant need to redeclare war agianst provinces in a country whose capital I already occupy...I too am about to give the game a rest until the first patch comes out.....

RE: I give up
I didn't think I was ?, I am fustrated, and a little disappointed, we were told they were going to do a write up on how this and that works, so we could make the game work rightnegative
then later, we were sort of told, that, well, we wanted to wait till the patch came out since it will change things
but, once it changes things, we really won't need that much info on how to run our countries, as the changes should fix what is wrong with them, that we don't understand
oh well, off to take on the Eastern Front, then again, I should be close to getting my Diamonds to my Knights Cross soon....
sooooo many wars, so little time

I don't think Sarge is being negative, he is just stating soem valid points. He is not trashing the game.

RE: I give up
To be honest, I'm split on my opinion of this game. On one hand, I'm fascinated by the concept and the scope of the game. Its really amazing and seems to be a game I've wanted for a long time.
On the other hand, I get the impression that CoG just barely cleared the minimum possible hurdle for being released. It seems like just everywhere you turn in the game you are struggling with Ui and concepts that just barely work, or have bugs, and basically tend to be very frustrating to play.
I'm not sorry I bought this game. The concept is strong enough that I'm ok with contributing some money towards its development. But I do find that now that the first rush of "wow, what a neat game" is passed, that I'm not playing it as much and that I'm playing it for shorter time frames. Its rather quickly dropping from my game playing list in favor of some older favorites.
And I noticed after playing another game until 2am the other night, I hadn't mistakenly moved units where I didnt' want them, I hadn't puzzled over economic or diplomatic screens that either have unexplained options or don't seem to really tell you what's going on, and my troops hadn't once plundered my own cities because they'd been in another country when peace was declared so they magically transported back to the English midlands where they did their ordered raping and pillaging. (Hmmm, 9 months after an army pillages, should there be a pop bump?)
Again, I like this game. But it was noticeable when I went back to playing a more mature game that many frustrations I'd been living with in CoG weren't there. Kinda like having a boss who's been yelling at you suddenly go on vacation for two weeks.
I do think this will be an amazing game, but I also think it will be more than one patch before it gets there. The stuff in this first patch will help, but there's more than that that needs to be done.
But that's largely because the people who created this game chose to tackle a large topic in a way that seems to have a good chance to do it justice. Somewhere down the line, CoG will be an amazing game.

RE: I give up
I agree that it will be a truly great game but is currently in a beta plus stage. After playing around with it a bit I'm letting others finish the beta testing and am reading the manual/guides/etc. After the first patch comes out I'll start playing since I believe most of the big bugs and problems will be gone. This looks like one that will be on my hard drive for a really long time.

RE: I give up
Hi, Well I have mixed feelings concerning this. I have already enjoyed myself playing COG but I am frustrated by online play.
If I was asked in advance I would prefer to pay for a game and then post bugs and test because it gets the game finished sooner and I get a little input to the finished product.
I understand not everyone likes testing. (Testing is a lot like work )
I have no problems playing solo all my problems occur online. (Which is really annoying because I think this game is made for online play)

RE: I give up
Hi Rich
Congrats
oh boy
I don't think we should feel like we are really beta testers here, this is a finished game, it is a game that works, it is a game that does what it sets out to do, there are some bugs, plus some of the bugs people are getting a lot of, and others are not seeing them, so that should not be blamed on anyone, most of the others are things that were set up they way they wanted, but the players either don't like or would like done other ways, and they are trying to go along with us, the players
I have been a beta tester, and believe me, this is very nice, compared to some of the tests I have done
LOL was in a online flight sim, that if someone in the room bailed out of there plane, every one in the room, got a HARD crash, need to turn off the power and restart the puter, and then fix the puter as it changed most of the settings in the puter when it crashed, and then go in a try it again (that crash, even broke some of the puters that were testing it)
took us a while to find the cause of that one
so, lets give them a little break, they working on it, and it is not really very broke, just fustrating
HARD_Sarge
oh, and by the by, I didn't quit for long
Congrats

RE: I give up
No, no. I wasn't being critical. This is a very complex game and it's a wonder it's as good as it is on issue. Maybe I'm burned out on that stuff. I've been working on an ai script for another game over the last few months and just unwilling to take on anything close to the same sort of thing right now. I just want to play games without worrying about how they work or how to fix them.
