Still got the BUG on province surrender

Post by gdpsnake »

Sometimes my men performing a seige will have the province surrender to me whether it is a protectorate or not. The province becomes mine for all purposes as it should.

Other times the defenders will 'evaporate' and the province will "seem" to be mine but I have no production or control over it whatsoever AND the province shows with TWO crosshatched colors, mine and the previous owner.

When the previous owner (empire) surrenders to me, those same provinces REVERT TO HIS CONTROL and I am kicked out! They become his protectorates again.

This is so wrong and needs to be fixed. A province conquered is just that - CONQUERED. Any province seiged and beaten should become CONQUERED.

Only the original Empire provinces (home provinces) should revert back to the original owner except those I choose to have ceded in the treaty. Protectorates would remain protectorates unless conquered or liberated by the treaty.

I would attach my save game but I still can't get this forum to accept ANY form of attachment, normal or zip.
This needs to be fixed....

From what you describe, I don't think you are seeing a bug - although the confusion it causes sure is a bug in its own right.

Conquered provinces and protectorates can belong to any "player" which under COG's hood means any country that can have troops of its own. ("Nation" is the word reserved for the 8 who can be directly played by a human). So a protectorate can have subordinate provinces and even subordinate protectorates.

If a province belongs either directly to a nation or to a protectorate, it cannot be conquered. It can be occupied, and ceded, but not conquered. The only things in COG that can be conquered are a single province protectorate/free, and the capital province of a multi-province protectorate/free.

If that province is a subordinate province to a protectorate, it will look to you on the surface as a protectorate - but it isn't: it is a subordinate province of a multi-province protectorate.
-- you can tell because the city isn't marked as a capital, and the flag is someone elses [both minor and tricky indicators]
-- note the corolary - if you take the capital of the protectorate, all its subordinate provinces become yours too. (so in 1792, taking Warsaw gives you about a dozen minors!)

There is a remaining bug, where a subordinate province changes state and thinks it is in a valid multi-province protectorate, but the capital province isn't in that protectorate. It should be fixed in the second patch.

Does that match your experience? Keep an eye on itm abd lets chat. Finding and reproducing some of these bugs is rocket science!

just remember mate
they said, they got most of it working the way they want it to, with the protectorates

there are still some odditys that will pop up and those are being hunted down, but are HARDer to pin down

hopefully the next patch will cure 99% of the odditys

Thank you for the explanation Ralegh and it makes some sense but it is still exceedingly hard to tell which provinces are affected. I would put on a wish list, a clearer indication of which provinces could be conquered versus which can only be occupied.

Now that the MFC Plato bug is gone (mostly, I still had it once since the patch), this is probably my new number one issue.

To attach something other then the items that you are allowed to attach, just change the extension of the file to match the possilbe file types you can upload.

example. I have attached a zip file of a game in progress. To attach it I have changed the file name to from save.zip to save.gif.

Now if you download the attached file and rename it from save.gif to save.zip you can unzip the file and have the saved game.

Hope that is clear and helpfull.

So a protectorate can have ... subordinate protectorates.

Can you give an example of an existing relationship at start or the mechanism by which protectorates aquire protectorates? I don't think I've seen this. Poland?

Okay, so what about single province protectorates which are conquered, and upon the surrender of their protector, to their conqueror, revert to being the the protectorate once more of the defeated Power, with the victors troops teleporting out of the now once again single province protectorate?

This means we have to declare war on the minor, it becomes a protectorate, you win the war and demand its liberation (because it cannot be ceeded to you), so that you can declare war on it again and hope you capture it before another power becomes its protector and the whole rig-ma-role starts all over again. Having captured it, should single province protectorates not either behave just like a single province independent minor, or become YOUR protectorate? It is illogical to revert to being the protected province of a major power who has just shown that they cannot protect you!
