Either it is a remote control 4 in waist gun with the cover still in place or some kind antenna or perhaps even a magnetomer transducer for submarine detection?

Could be the troop carrier variant of the Wirraway. I beleive the passengers would stand on the wing and hold onto the bar.

No... I'm pretty sure that's not a Wirraway; Brady would have plunked that in the WitP forum.

Miles M.25 Martinet

Martinet was used as a target-tug; perhaps that bar is used for towing gunnery targets.

Ya that thing is a target tug huk up, though when I went parachuting I had to crawl out and hange/stand on a wing strut, the pucker factor was prety high on that one.
