U.S. Infantry in France (WWI), heavy machinegun team using the standard French Hotchkiss mg.

(the position appears to be a destroyed church)

Using the Hotchkiss instead of the BAR must have been one of worst decisions the US Army made during the 20th century.

That's what happens when you decide to go to war without the industrial base to support it!

Actually they did not use it instead of the BAR. They (USA) used the Chauchat as the SAW until BARs were available late in 1918.
The Hotchkiss was the HMG for the first 4 to 7(?) divisions in France, the rest receiving the Vickers HMG. Then everyone (most) got Browning M1917s late in the war when they were available.

Did the BAR even see active service before the Armistice?

Oh yes, many thousands were used, but I believe mainly from September 1918 on for actual use by the troops.

The weapon that was sitting on the wharfes never used was the Thompson SMG as I recall.

Yep, produced just months too late to be shipped to France, as I recall.

A quick Internet check ought to verify that.(WWI is another long passion of mine).
