Civil War version graphics resolution

Post by toddtreadway »

I'd like to see higher game resolutions supported in the Civil War version. It makes a huge difference with LCD displays (being able to use the full screen at native resolution). Preferably at least up to 1600x1200 or some sort of customizable system like Highway to the Reich has.

I'm with you regarding the resolution. Games should behave like other applications and scale to any possible resolution. I can see that there need to be certain minimum requirements, but I don't think there is a valid reason why a game, a strategy game in particular, can't scale to high resolutions or aspect ratios other than 4:3.

In GGWAW of course the limiting factor is that all UI elements are bitmaps. Bitmaps have a fixed size of so and so many pixels. I guess that's in order to conserve resources / make the game more accesible to modders, but I really wish the UI would have been a textured polygon (which our present day graphic cards push so well, and which would scale to virtually any size).

What's Next

So, what's next for 2by3? Work on our American Civil War game using the GGWaW engine has been going well, and now we'll be able to focus even more time on it. We should have something up and running in the next few months. This game shouldn't take three years to develop. Gary wrote the basic design last summer, and I'm guessing that it will take another year to finish (no promises). Our plan is for Gary to be the lead programmer on this game. Mike Wood is just finishing up the War in the Pacific 1.50 patch and we're hoping that, with Keith's help, he'll be able to focus on Russian Front by the end of March. Given the size and complexity of that game, it's a good bet that it will take at least 18 months, if not more, to finish. Keith has been working off and on for years on a space game design. We're hoping that in addition to helping both Gary and Mike, he can finally spend some quality time working on his space game. That should keep us all busy for awhile.
