Console feature

An opponent recently advised me that the console feature was inoperative in the game file I had sent him. I didn't know what he was referring to at first, but after a quick search of the the forums and a look at the v. 1.040 readme file I think I'm clear on what the console does.

I tested several old files from different opponents and sure enough, the console value never moves from 0 prior to saving the file. Then I created a dummy PBEM game and tried to get the load count to appear, with no results. I could exit without saving multiple times, finish the turn, open it as the next player and see no load count displayed.

I tried reinstalling v. 1.040 from the website with no change. My original installation of W@W was via the internet, I have Windows XP as an operating system, no non-standard configurations of any kind on my PC ... any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this feature?
