Best War Film Actor

I shall try to tally points daily here - the winning thespian gets a Matrix mug bought by me and then wrapped with a little tinsel and an Action man G.I helmet . This will then be sent with love to the actor/widow/trust etc........

3. Richard Todd - in anything - as he was a geniune Pegasus Bridge Hero and then got to play himself, very cool!!!
4. John Wayne - In anything war based cos he's so badly cast ( " So I gotta play this General.. Have I got a horse?) . ...I LOVE IT.................

1. Richard Burton - I love his performance in the Desert Rats.
2. John Wayne - any WW2 or other war movie.
3. Michael Caine - Both for Zulu and A Bridge Too Far
4. Humphrey Bogart - Sahara, that's all I need to say.
5. James Mason - He was a very good Rommel, and erie as the General in the Blue Max.

but supposedly Bruno Ganz as Hitler earns top honors in that category

2. Humphrey Bogart in "Sahara"
3. George Segal in "Remagen". He played a LT. that just wanted him and his men to go home alive.
4. Micheal Caine in "Zulu" I'll never forget him yelling "Relay Fire! Relay Fire!"
5. I can't remember his name, he played the 1st SGT. who led a special forces team of Marines in the Philipines after the Captain was killed in "Ambush Bay"(it's either James mitchum or Hugh 0' Brian, not sure which)

for this category "actor" should be confined to replication of an actual historical individual
there are many fine acting performances in war films
but faithfully representing an actual figure is more demanding

This is a tough one.

1. Mel Gibson, "We Were Soldiers"

3. Steve McQueen, "The Sand Pebbles" (can't leave this one out--a very under-rated performance)
4. Damian Lewis, "Band of Brothers"
5. Robert Duvall, "Apocalypse Now" (a cameo, but priceless)

In terms of quality performances.

Ralph Fiennes - Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. Quite simply the most chilling, yet utterly convincing portrayal of a NAZI I have ever seen. An unbelievable performance.

Jurgen Prochnow - Lt. Henrich Lehmann-Willenbrock in Das Boot. Nothing has ever come so close to recreating the mind blowing terror of being 300 feet beneath the waves whilst people above you try to drown you.

Tom Hanks - Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan. Somehow, Mr Hanks managed to turn in a cliche free performance with real empathy.

Damien Lewis - Dick Winters in Band of Brothers. He really was rather good in an understated way. Really watchable.

Favourite performances (although also excellent)

Lee Marvin - Maj. John Reisman in the Dirty Dozen. Boys own mission movie, but superbly done, and a little unsettling at times. The Big Red one also deserves a mention for Lee's archetypal old sweat Sergeant.

Anthony Hopkins - Lt. Col. John Frost in a Bridge too far. The finest small unit action by an Allied unit in WWII. He oozed Britishness. Elliot Gould, Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Dirk Bogarde also deserved a mention for this.

Richard Burton - Maj. Jonathan Smith, MC in Where Eagles Dare. American firepower (Clint kicks ass) but British brains. An unstoppable combination.

James Coburn - Feldwebel Rolf Steiner in Cross of Iron.

Richard Harris as Oliver Cromwell - everything completely overblown, but Harris was loud, driven and mesmeric.

Who thought it was possible to get away with only 5? I haven't even started.
