Orderly withdrawal?

I've tried to do this, myself...but to no avail. Once I hit that arrow button, my hitherto un-routed units run straight into the arms of my pursuers for a bit of punishment before they decide to turn north....even though they're near the edge of the map.

Retreat is terrible to me, but sometimes you find a single corps you own fighting somebody who has a shipload of cavalry so your guys are too busy forming square to bring firepower to bear.

Because I always play at 70% readiness, I can't split my units. If I have 100K guys I can easily beat 400K of the enemy. But if I have only 50K and the enemy brings enough cav in 100K or more troops to keep me in square, I don't have any opportunity to maul enough of them with highly upgraded infantry. One arty battery and one cav per corp or army isn't enough to stem the tide.

...and since I CAN'T call on a neighboring province's troops...options become limited.

The German blood in me must have the same effect. I've never retreated and would never do so. Fighting to a glorious death is more honourable.

Btw, how come (when reading your AAR's) you're heavily biased towards playing the French? I've never seen you playing Blucher (just curious with your German ancestory and all).
I think playing France is one of the most challenging experiences; I never succeed overcoming their financial problems so: respect![&o]

For myself, despite being half German, half Australian, and having lived in England for virtually all my life, I always play as France. Always have done in thirty years or so of wargaming. All the glory, honour and elan of the period is typified by the Imperial Guard et al, so there's really no alternative for an old romantic like me. [:)]

well, France is sort of like Germany in many WWII games, they are the main point of the war, a Agressive player is kind of needed to play them, to keep the war going

(sort of like HOI I/II, the AI can be fun to play from the other sides, but GE will be crushed real early, so, to get the war going, it is still best to play as GE)

also, since I am now on the testing team, I figured it would be best to stick to one nation and one Campaign, this way any changes would stick out so much faster

(plus we have others who are playing the other nations, hopefully doing the same thing)

say a change to troop costs, if I was playing Prussia last game and now start out as Turkey, the changes would not show up to me, as I don't know what to expect to start with

and as a lot of stuff is being worked on with ecc, I got a good feel for France in 1792 gamewize, so can see if this helps or not

and YES, I look forward to being able to play as Prussia or Aus down the road (really would like to take over as Poland though !!!!)

I prefer Turkey or Russia. Especially in the long campaign (23 years) where you can build up from scratch.
