John III vs. Wolfpack: The Japanese Version

Post by John 3rd »

Wolfpack and I are playing a stock Scenario 15 campaign with player defined options on, sub doctrine off, and historical reinforcements.

We have agreed to not read each other's AAR so visions of tactics, strategy, production, and personal thoughts can be freely put down.

Background:
I am a Naval Historian that teaches part-time college and am a High School Social Studies teacher for the REAL job. The chance to try this great game and do better and/or worse then the Japanese did is lure that cannot be ignored! We shall see.

Experience:
I have a current PBEM campaign running with Moses that has reached July 1942. It has been a blast but I have learned lessons on how to better play this game out. We'll see...

In my next posting, I will sketch my vision of initial operations, planning, and production plans.

Hope you enjoy the thread!

Dec 7th

Operations have begun with a BANG!

The KB struck at PH and achieved what I would describe as an 'average' result:
Battleships: BB Arizona sank, heavy damage was done to California, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, moderate damage to West Virginia, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Nevada.
Support Ships: Good news in that 3 CL were damaged by bombs and/or TTs. Phoenix, Helena, and Detroit were all on fire.
Two DD were also hit severely. AV Curtiss and SS Narwal got hit also.

Good damage achieved throughout the attack. Hitting the Cls is nice and knocking out an additional SS is ALWAYS a good thing!

American Plane Losses: 53 Ftrs, 16 Bombers, and 15 Recon planes.

Japanese Losses: 1Z, 12K, and 8V for a total of 20. Another 82 were damaged.

KB immeidately splits into two elements. Akagi and Kaga head West-SW towards Kwajelein. They, hopefully, will draw American attention and Wolfpack will think I am leaving to go the DEI. Akagi and Kaga will link-up with mini-KB to give it some real teeth.

Remaining CVs move North to repair planes and refuel from tankers. They will then take up a blocking position NE of PH to see if they can catch anything. I will keep them there about 5-7 days.

Other fronts:
Malaya
1. Landing at Kuantan with no issues. Repeated air attacks don't scratch any ships paint!
2. Songkhai reinforcements landing.
3. Air Raids on British bases net a decent number of planes destroyed.

I moved a couple of DB squadrons into Songkhai they catch a squadron of MSW trying to leave Singapore. The Anns, Sonias, and Mary's do well and damage 5 MSW.

Philippines--Landings go off without a hitch as well. Batan falls and I will take Legaspi, Aparri, and Vigan tomorrow.

China--Hit Changsha with LBA and troops headed south to try to grab it.

Opening Invasions going well and nothing to complain about. Follow-on invasions and strategic overview to come next.

Wolfpack and I have played several turns and I thought that things were well developed enough now to layout my initial strategy and goals for the first phases of the war:

Let me try this again.

Philippines:
I have landed at nearly all of the 'traditional' sites: Aparri, Legaspi, and Vigan. Each of these landings have been successful and taken their site. Each landing force has enough power to make Wolfpack take them very seriously. What he doesn't know is that I do not intend to take these islands seriously until I have conquored Malaya and Singapore. Troops normally going to the Philippines will instead land at Johore Bahru and try to win Singapore quickly. Three large convoys carrying 2 Divisions, several tank regiments, lots of engineers, and other support units have already crossed the northern edge of the Philippines.

Malaya
Have already mentioned my strategy there. Landed at Kuantan to grab the air base and am going to act like I am being conservative. A brigade from Saigon is landing at Songkhai with enough base force support to make that airfield be able to handle about 150 planes. While the Brits are occupied with those landings, my Johore force will approach and land. It will be heavily escorted and CAP will be provided by fighters flying from Kuantan.

If Wolfpack does not fall back all the way to Singapore immediately, I should be able to take the base fairly easily. We shall see.

China
In my other PBEM campaign with Moses, I have nearly been kicked off of the Chinese coast due to my own stupidity in trying to attack everywhere. Lesson learned. I am going to concentrate on clearing out and taking Changsha first. To that end, troops are already entering the hex where that city is and I have concentrated the Japanese LBA in Wuhan to strike hard.

Am pulling some troops out of Manchuria to strengthen the assault.

DEI (West Side)
Invasion convoys are loading and heading out for Kuching and Palembang. I want these two sites so I can establish air control here and do it before I have to worry about the skill levels of the Allied LBA.

Major Naval Units: Nagato and Mutsu plus numerous CA/CL/DD. Large portion of Naval LBA shall support.

DEI (East Side)
Invasions convoys headed to Davao, Amboina, and several of the smaller bases North of Amboina. Quick posession of these will give me air supremacy over that side of the map.

Major Naval Units: The other four old BB are there along with Mini-KB who will gain Akagi and Kaga in about 10 days. With support ships and Naval LBA, they should easily dispatch any trouble there.

Island Groups
A TF is currently headed for Wake with enough troops to make sure of victory. Guam has already fallen. The South Seas Detachment will move to Truk and start prepping for Rabaul. In a major diversion from the DEI effort, I am moving the Sendai Division to Truk to help spearhead the attack upon Rabaul, Port Moresby, and other nearby locations.

I will start to develop Tarawa into a substantial base. Same with Lunga. I expect all this to develop during the next 6-8 weeks of time. The KB will support these moves.

Future Plans:
1. I will move north eventually and take the Aleutians--Dutch Harbor and, possibly, Anchorage will be targets. Already going after Kiska to develop as a base.
2. Once DEI falls, I will occupy NW Australia to keep LBA away from that portion of DEI.
3. Burma--Take Rangoon and see how far north I can go.
4. SE Pacific--Luganville, Efate, and even Noumea are not out-of-the-question as targets.

As any Japanese player knows, I MUST force the American CVs to be deployed for a favorable battle. To accomplish this, they must be forced to defend something vital.

Combat Report December 8-9th

The Great and ALL-POWERFUL Japanese Juggernaut has been unleashed and is destroying all in its path!

Philippines
Batan, Aparri, Vigan, and Legaspi all fall. 48th Infantry Division, 65th Brigade, and support units are firmly ashore and fulfilling their job of distracting the American High Command into thinking a traditional attack will occur here. Base Forces are on their way to make Aparri my main air base. Army LBA will takeover the air war here in about a week. Navy LBA will move to Davao and Amboina as soon as those bases are taken and operational.

Malaya
The 18th and 5th Inf Divisions are firmly ashore and have taken Kuantan. Base Forces on the way to bring airpower to this area. This air base shall cover my landings at Johore Bahru in about a week.

British airpower is drawn to attack Kongo and Haruna. My BCs are shooing down LOTS of British planes! [:D] No damage to ANY of my transports!

At Songkai I have the 4th Inf Brigade and additional Base Forces to make that base a strong center of airpower. Additional reinforcements are coming from Saigon and a drive will then begin from the North.

I am hitting each British base in the north with Army LBA under Oscar escort. Singapore and the seas are under the watchful eye of Naval LBA.

Elsewhere
Guam Falls.

Wake Invasion Force on the way.

Kuching and Palembang Invasion Forces are about finished loading and will depart under strong naval escort.

Davao, Amboina, Sorong, and Menado Invasion Forces are on their way.

Set my Paratroopers to land and take Taytay and Putro Princessa.

Naval Activity
Subs:
I-155 nails CL Boise with a TT as she flees Philippines

The KB has made its split and slipped away. I have the main force (Hiryu, Soryu, Sho, and Zui) moving NE to place them between Hawaii and USA.

Combat Report 12/9/41

Philippines
My convoy at Legaspi is attacked by a MIGHTY force of 2 PG. Several ships damaged--nothing major.

I had planned to hit Manila Bay today and go after shipping but was held back due to bad weather.

In a lightning move, Paratroopers seize Taytay and Puerto Princessa! Have ships at Para's home base to lift balance of regiments and base force to Taytay where they will prep for their next jump.

Malaya
Convoys still unloading. All troops ashore and supplies being delivered. British LBA continues to demonstrate how UNWISE it is to attack BCs! [:'(] Capture Kuantan and prepare to send aircraft their. I have had Ocsars from Songkhai on Long Range CAP. They have actually been useful. Not often I mention Oscars and USEFUL in the same sentence!

China
Big battle brewing at Changsha. My troops have arrived to find the Chinese hordes waiting. Order Bombardment attacks to begin. We'll see...I HATE CHINA!

Hong Kong surrenders and 7,500 British become POWs! Send MSW to clear minefields. Gain a HUGE haul of Oil and Supplies! YUMMY!!! [8D]

Other
Two convoys leave Kagoshima:
2nd Inf Div and 1st Eng Regiment head for Truk. They are already Prepping for PM.
8th Tanks, 17th Hv Artillery, and two construction units leave for Johore Bahru.

Naval/Air Action
Mini-KB is in action! They nail 2 AK fleeing Phil

Those MSW that my Army DB hit yesterday get hit again and 3 sink.

I-157 puts a TT into MSW and sinks it. The IJN SS Force is on the board!

Combat Report 12/10/41

Philippines
Convoys almost all unloaded.

Another small scirmish occurs when the American PTs put in an appearance. Two are sunk but one of the my 2DD is hit by a TT. Damage is bad but Pescadores is not too far away...

Naval Bombardment in Mindanao by old BBs: Hit both Davao and Cagayan.

Malaya
Convoys almost unloaded as well. BC Kongo takes a bomb...have to get out a broom to sweep off the deck! Want this done soon so Kongo TF can refuel and then escort several TF heading for Johore Bahru.

China
Make a lunge at Changsha and learn better! Chinese Reinforcement just arrived in the nick of time. Lose 4,000 troops in exchnage for 1,500 Chinese...[8|]

Other
Capture Makin

Convoy forming for Tarawa. Want to make that a decent base for later activities.

Naval/Air Action
In an ominous development for the Allied Powers, a squadron of Nells raids Palembang and sinks a TK!

An Oiler tries to flee Cagayan and is sunk by Yamashiro and Fuso.

Another MSW sinks from earlier damage near Singapore

Mini-KB sinks 2 AK and AS Holland. They damage another AK and AVD Childs. Cannot wait for Kaga and Akagi to give more punch to this TF.

On the Subject of the KB:
While the Japanese have the initiative, I like to split the KB into two and then three Carrier TF. Right now I will have two of these working:
KB-1 Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku 270 Planes
KB-2 Akagi, Kaga, 2 CVL, and little Hosho 230 Planes

Within two months I will add Shoho, Junyo, and Hiyo to the fleet. I will reorganize at that point and put Junyo, Hiyo, Hiryu and Soryu together. The CVL will be split between the remaining two TF. Each of the three TF should then have 4 Carriers with about 200 planes each.

This organization gives me flexiblity to be in multiple area at once and have enough striking power to handle anything short of 3 American CV.

Thoughts?

Malaya
More raids on Kuantan TF. More shotdown British planes. Convoys will head for Saigon tomorrow and BC Force will do the same. Need them for future escort duty.

China
Bombard Changsha with Artillery and LBA.

MSW Start clearing Hong Kong minefields

Naval/Air Action

I conduct Fighter Sweeps over Clark, Manila, and San Marcelino--NO RESPONSE! Looks like he has pulled back his Air south.

The KB
In a move of TRUE stupidity, I forgot to raise the KB's speed from cruise to full. This DUMB move leaves the KB TOO far from Pearl to hit targets with TTs from my Kates. A large strikes goes in (31Z, 58V, and 77K) and encounters HEAVY Fighter opposition. Heavy Flak also causes trouble. When the smoke clear, I lose 31 planes (8Z, 15V, and 8K)! DAMMIT!!! [X(][X(] Just plain stupid on my part... In return for this disaster I shoot down 25 Fighters and harmlessly glance bombs off of Nevada, Maryland, and West Virginia; however, do some damage to CLs Detroit and Phoenix.

Live and learn from stupidity...

Order the KB to move off NE again to refuel. Got to decide what I want to do...

Sub Activity
NONE! Yea...

Ground Activity
Landing at Palembang, Kavieng, the Admiralties, and Bulla

Take Emirau and Palembang! Immediately move planes to Palembang. Zeroes, Tojos, and B/N go.

Johore Bharu Invasion Force is now one day from target. Convert escort force into Bombardment.

Air/Naval Activity
PT Attack at Vigan--two PTs damaged in exchange for two AK damaged.

In a massive attack on Singapore, Army LBA strikes the town with 55 Fighters (Oscars) and 72 Bombers. I lose 20 planes due to air-to-air and AAA but destroy 32 and inflict real damage on the Air Base.

Two raids on Manila Bay--decent results.

At Palembang, BB Mutsu takes a TT for minimum damage. Both Invasion Forces--Palembang and Johore inflict heavy casualties on British/Dutch air.

Kuching Bettys are now in it! [8D] They nail a convoy SE of Balikpapan: 2Ak and 1 TK hit.

Observations:
With Kuching and Palembang in my hands and aircraft flying in, the western part of the DEI is now under my aerial thumb. I will soon have a BF at Amboina and the eastern side will be able to dish out more damage. Davao anchors the center with its power.

Mini-KB reprovisioning at Davao and waiting for CarDiv 1 to arrive then they will go HUNTING!

I am going to keep the KB NE of PH for about 4 more days and then send them in a SE direction along trade routes seeking convoys...

Hit Changsha, CH with 100+ bombers prepping for another ground attack.

Hit Singapore AF again with nearly 100 planes: destroy nearly a dozen planes on the ground.

Manila Bay attack yields 586 casualties.

Massive Aerial action around Batavia: in a host of attacks, my Bombers from Palembang and Kuching hit left and right. Sink AS Canopus and damage 7 ships (2Tk/5AK). Lose only 1N in exchange for shooting down 8 Dutch Fighters.

Observations:
Wolfpack is trying to get all that oil out of the area and is heavily paying for it. This AP/AK/TK slaughter will only accelerate if he doesn't clear out fast!

Naval
A small TF hits Tarakan and catches 2 AK there. They go down in flames!

The Great Dutch Turkey Shoot--Day 3 continues with Betty's and Nell's striking at will! They tally 1 AK, 1 AP, and 3 TK this day with damage to twice that number.

PTs continue to annoy me in the Phil where another one is damaged while trying to attack a convoy.

The KB finishes off that convoy from yesterday sinking 6 more AK! [8D] YUM! Order the KB to head south and will swing it around the southern portion of the Hawaiian Islands and then head for Kwajelein. This will become their base of operations for the next couple of months. Hiryu(63), Soryu(63), Shokaku(72), and Zuikaku(72) will function as KB, TF 1 and conduct support as well as raiding operations in the eastern and southern Pacific. Total plane complement will be: 90Z, 90V, and 90K.

KB, TF 2 is formed this day when Akagi(72) and Kaga(72) join Hosho(10), Ryuho(48), and Zuiho(30). They carry a total of 232 planes: 99Z, 48V, and 83K. Rhujo will soon be finished and she will add 30 more planes to KB2. I'll let them sit a day in Davao and then will will raid towards Darwin and then up the southern side of Java.

Japanese lose an AP from the Wake Invasion Force that was trying to get back to Kwajelein.

Summation:
Another productive day: 9 AK, 3TK, and 1 AP sink! Wolfpack has now lost an even 60 ships in less then two weeks of war.

Chill out in Changsa and take your time. As long as you stand in the city he is not producing anything there. You've already cut his production by a huge bit.

Bombard, bombard, bombard. Your arty is better and you will start wearing him down and causing his units to consume double supply. Bomb the Changsa airfield so that he spends his time repairing it instead of digging forts. Bring in the force you need. 10 to 12 divisions with supporting artillery and engineers is doable without letting down your guard in the rest of the theater.

Once all your guys are there and have had a few days of rest then start to think about launching a shock attack. After each attack bombard for 3-7 days to recover and kill 1000 Chinese per day. Of course have everyone prepping for Changsa.

You'll soon see if he has the stomach to really fight you there. If he wants to he can send 20 corps and fight for quite a while. But this is very risky as its hard to maintain this force in the face of your massive artillery attacks in clear terrain. Once it does collapse he will lose tons of supply.

More likely he will decide to bail out and cut his losses. Then the city will be yours.

Hey Moses! Glad to have you on MY side this game! Since you have beaten the SNOT out of me in China, I am glad I don't and will not, go through that in this game.

Thanks for the advice.
