The Most SPWaW-like Moment in a War Movie
The initial advance of XXX Corps in "A Bridge Too Far" is like an SPWaW advance mission come to life. If you have the DVD, it has it all, from the opening artillery bombardment to the first opp fires by the enemy.
What other movie holds moments like this? Life imitates game, not vice versa.

I have that movie and have often compared those scenes to SPWAW...

Well except I would never try and advance my armor down narrow roads over soil unable to support the vehicles against enemy tanks, anti tank weapons and infantry.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

I have to chuckle when Joe Vandeleur mentions to one of his subordinates: "One thing I didn't tell you about this road -- this is the WIDE part." [X(]

I built a scenario based on that movie scene called "A Job for the Infantry"
They struggled with a ferocity that was to be expected of brave men fighting with forlorn hope against an enemy who had the advantage of position......knowing that courage was the one thing that would save them.

Speaking of scenarios, I did a whole series on those events in SPI, but that was long ago. And in addition to the scenario of Major Destruction, there must be others out there.

Speaking of movies, has anyone seen the German movie called 'Stalingrad'? I just got it from Netflix and I've seen the first 40 minutes. Pretty good so far. The battle scenes really capture the 'disorder' that occurred in the fighting around the factories.

It's an amazing film, and it gets better from there...

I posted it here: http://www.spwaw.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=66652#66652
This might also satisfy one's desire to mount a creeping barrage of frightening intensity.
Stay close behind the advancing bombardment. The German troops recover quickly.

Another scene that looked like SPWaW -- I know "Windtalkers" generally sucked, BUT the overview of the Japanese ridge defenses in the initial Saipan invasion scene, with American planes diving in, the Marines advancing, and the fleet offshore, looked pretty damn impressive. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. [:-]

The first battle scene, 20 min into the movie, is another SPWaW-like moment : with Russian artillery landing amongst their own positions, the Assault Engineers go to work.
I bought this DVD, Adamo. It ranks right next to "Das Boot" as the best German-produced war movie IMHO.

Gunny, have you seen "The Downfall" yet? It's not strictly speaking a war movie, but it's unbelievably good.

No, I haven't, but I'll put it on my want list. Thanks for the recommendation.

Yes, I just rented and watched "Downfall" last night on DVD, and it's a great film! It's very authentic and Bruno Ganz does an uncanny job playing Hitler! There are more than a few very chilling moments in the film.
Particular effort seems to have been made to ensure historical accuracy.
I highly recommend it [:)]

Oh, and as far as Spwaw moments go:
In the film "Cross of Iron" I like the scene where the German troops face the Russian tank attack with a PAK40 AT gun (which they dragged there) and some grenade bundles!
Makes you realize that much more drama happens in an infantry close-assault on a tank than is illustrated by the in-game messages [;)]

This has probably been mentioned a million times but isn't 'Band of Brothers' absolutely fantastic?!?! During the Ardennes campaign when the mortars come raining down on them---frighteningly 'real'! Or when they're working with the British troops in that town and all of a sudden a Tiger comes around the bend and the Brit tank commander 'has strict orders not to fire unless fired upon!' Very funny!

I don't think I'd use the word funny in that instance, but BoB is amazingly good.

We must have seen two different movies. The one I saw only got worse from there. I don't mean movie worse, I mean depressing worse. I was just waiting for those poor saps to die so the suffering would stop.
As Cajun Man would say, "Depression."

It does get depressing. That's the whole point...
