Who here has ever managed to sink a major enemy fleet unit (BB or CV) by submarine? I've lost count of the number of times I've seen a big fat battlewagon or birdfarm sail into my periscope crosshairs, and sail right out of them again!

I've managed once to sink the CVE Hosho with a Dutch Sub in late december 41
In my current game with MC i've sunk the BB Colorado with 2 fishes in her stomache after a 10 days pursuit with my I-21( The battlewagon ended his rush beneath the waves 3 hexes far from San Francisco[:)]

As with General H, I've had a number of BBs and CVs sunk by enemy subs, but never had the pleasure in return...[:(]

Nah, not a chance. But I did manage to have a US destroyer torpedo (not DC) a Japanese sub and sink it![:D]

If picking off "limpers" counts, one of my subs sunk the Akagi off palau when a few turns prior it had taken multiple bombs and I suspect had significant system damage (like 30 plus) already.

It counts. I was thinking of undamaged ships when I started the thread, but a dead carrier is a dead carrier. What counts is if it's a submarine that puts 'em on the bottom.

Sunk the Hiei, on December 7th, first shots of the war, must of been quite unnerving for the Japanese as they launched their planes for PH seeing one of they escort battleships having a magazine explosion.

I was thinking on this the other day. I don't think i've ever sunk a capital ship outright with a sub. I've hit a couple of boats - Repulse with 2 fish in my game vs swift for example.

In the current game a dutch Submarine managed to put two torpedos into one the Japanese CVL's off Java, that was a week or 2 ago in game time, still no report it sank. 3 times my dutch aircraft ( once with a slew of american P-40s have managed to get a few torpedo and LB through Cap and attack the regular CV, never scored a hit.

But the CVL I put two torpedos in had been damaged by Dutch aircraft twice before the sub fired.

American sub managed to fire on one Japanese BB , they never hit or were duds.

As for lost submarines, the Americans lost 2 boats ( both started in Manila) and one Dutch boat ( of course it was one of the minelayers) I have been unable to sink any Japanese submarines with ASW task forces ( I dont put more than 4 , well occasionally 6) ships in ASW task forvce ( usually 3 DD or 4 PG/MSW) I did manage to sink one I boat with ASW aircraft from Australia. Not a direct sinking, it sank a couple days later headed for home.

It is now very late February 42.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

i had some success. In my very first PBEM i put torpedo in US CV near Noumea.

I can be satisfied with my sub force in my PBEM against String. I used them as a secondary weapon (chasing damaged capital ships - learned from PzB!) and finished damaged BC Repulse. Also damaged West Wirginia (i think) on her voyage to the West Coast was hit with 3 torps, but i'm not sure if she sink.

Yes, IJN CV that was already damaged (maybe twice, FOW makes it uncertain).

One of my subs put a couple of torpedoes into Repulse as she was running for Australia. It was at the Java-Sumatra gap. I wasn't sure how badly I damaged her, but my opponent told me she was flooding and he didn't think she'd make it. It's been a couple of weeks and she hasn't shown up on the sunk list yet. Fingers are crossed.

Edit: That sub paid the ultimate price. The crew is now fish food.

Against Herb I had a dutch sub stick two torps into a pristeen Kaga just below Balikpapan - she limped to port but eventually seccumbed to the wounds.

He has since paid me back by doing the same against Yorktown - she made it to port however - and will not sink (this time).
In this same game I have now had 4 torp hits on escorted Jap BBs bombarding PM - 2 fish into the Hiei apparently hurt her badly but I have no sinking confirmation. I lost MANY subs doing this.

I have also had the Shokaku torpedoed by a US minelaying sub in Noumea Harbour against RogueMC. The sub escaped without a sratch and Shokaku went into port and was also saved.

So Yeah - I've seen plenty.

In my last game, the USS S-43 put a couple of torpedoes into the Shoho and sank her off Truk in July '42. If she had been damaged at the time, it was barely the case, so I pretty much consider it a case of sinking a pristine CVL.

In one of my PBEM games I sunk the KAGA with a single torp.. She had been damaged in a carrier exchange Nnw of Tulgi, and had been in Truk for a week. She set out to go back to japan I assume, and I got a lucky shot.
I thought this place was a empire, now im the last, I can't be sure...
