"Gomer Pyle" from a late 60's sitcom called "Gomer Pyle, USMC" which was a comedy spinoff from "The Andy Griffith Show". Famous director, Ron Howard played "Opie" in that show.

Gomer Pyle was a bumbling Marine who couldn't do anything right, kind of a Marine version of Gilligan. The actor's name was Jim Nabors. He also had a very good singing voice and released several albums. During the 90's word got out that he was gay.

My Marine Recruiter told me that I couldn't join the Corps, because my mother and father weren't brother and sister.

So I enlisted in the Army instead.[;)]

I had gyrene friends when the show just came out..They did not like the show, said enough people were making fun of them..(This was during VietNam)..
I was still in school when it first came on, I did not like it as it was same time slot as "Twelve O'Clock High",(a really great series which was killed by the network when the replaced serious actor Robert Lansing with a "more acceptable and younger looking" Paul Burke).
The latter series was based on the great 1949 war classic..................[8D]

In Kubrick's FMJ, drill instructor nicknamed Vincent d'Onofrio's clumsy, fat character Gomer Pyle. I always wondered why.

Full Metal Jacket was pretty good at depicting the terror a Drill Instructor can infuse on the weak minded and unprepared. I went to Boot Camp in 79, they officially didnt allow the Drill Instructors to hit or beat recruits by then ( some still did it, but if caught they lost their career) but the mind games were worse and while a DI couldnt hit you, he sure as hell could run you and pit you and PT you till you might wish he had hit you instead.

As for Gomer Pyle, the Marine Corps saw that show as good PR. Even after the actor was discovered to be gay the Marine Corps got more good PR from him then bad. You have to remember by the time it was general knowledge Jim Neighbors was or might be gay, the show had been over for YEARS. It just didnt matter and Neighbors didnt go out of his way to embarrass anyone or be a Gay activist.

The military really doesnt care if gays are in the service, as long as they dont tell anyone or get caught in compromising situations. Granted some individuals in the Military ( just as in civilian life) are Homophobes and depending on position and authority could get stupid. It just isnt worth the effort in time or people to root out gays. If a person serves without being a political lightning rod the services will ignore his personal life.

When one joins the military one loses freedoms, straights and gays alike. If someone wants to serve all they need to do is put the military first. It is pretty simple really. The needs of the military must come first, the needs of the troops always come third, after military needs, mission needs then troop needs.

Nobody ever got thrown out for being gay anyway. They got thrown out for saying they were straight when they enlisted...fraudulent enlistment is the rule they used. Now enlistees are not asked for their sexual preference. That's the only thing they changed.

You're right, no one is thrown out for being gay. But, if they say they're gay or "do something" to give evidence that they are gay, out they go. During my first drill as a commander (in the Guard), a soldier told me he was gay. He was gone that day and discharged before drill the next month. That was the quickest I've ever seen anyone get discharged, before or since.

Did this happen after the start of the Iraq war? Sounds like an effective way for both gays and straights in the Guard to avoid being sent to Iraq.

1999. I think he was sick of the anti-gay sentiment of the military. It was obvious he was gay, but he never did anything to "prove" it until then.

I always wonder why people make posters like this. Its not like anyone is conscripted into the Army or National Guard, they freaking volunteer, because they beleive in what we're fighting for.

Actually, if you read forum rules, OT threads that turn political get locked up. Ergo, this does not belong on this forum. Military and wargames are fine, but politics is not. Either way Erik, Frag, or VicKevlar will probably lock this up soon enough.
