New to this game - suggestions?

Post by Beldar »

Hi everyone!

I've played Axis and Allies, and this game is obviously MUCH MUCH more complicated, so I thought I'd start by reading the manual. Well, it's a week later and I've read it twice, and while I do have a very basic understanding of the game, it is pretty intimidating to get started.

I've been through both tutorials several times, but it looks like there's a LOT more to it than just that. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to get started and learn the system? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

hello Beldar, you must be from France!
perhaps we could share a game over some beer and fibreglass?

naw, seriously. you kinda have to play it out and take your lumps to really get a grasp on it i think. and pbem vrs AI is almost 2 different games.

I agree, you have to jump right in and get your feet wet.

obviously play against the AI as each country once, but then after that, post for a "newbie game". there are people joining all the time and in the same boat as you, so the learning curve won't be so severe.

on the other hand, if you are a fast learning, you can play even the experienced people and learn a trick or two to the more advanced play styles. you'll take some lumps, but you'll grasp the game faster.

like hyperbob said, AI and PBEM are two very different playing styles. I like to equate PBEM a lot like chess, where you really have to have a plan two move ahead of time. unfortunately you'll never know what those late game turns look like until you have a few games under your belt.

as an example, I've played dozens of games, but almost all of them as axis. I'm in a game now as allies and its 1946 and I didn't plan ahead too carefully and may lose the game because I can't dislodge 11 tanks from west germany, with the rest of the reich in ruins. however I know now better what the allied end game should play out like and I've already applied in a couple of other games I've already started.

Beldar, to add to what these guys have said,

Play everyside against yourself as human, think outside the box, read the threads, practice alternative moves and then try to counter them.

You will develop strategies for each side and contingencies.

The next patch will address most of the gamey moves, then it will be PBEM time.
