Serial number for retail games.

Post by GoofTrooper »

I purchased the retail version of UV about four years ago and have been able to download the latest, including beta patches, for a while. Now suddenly I need to register if I want 2.42 (or any follow on). How can I register if I don't have a serial numbed? I also read that you currently don't "Support" registration for retail games. I spent my money all the same and I am entitled to the same level of support (no more, no less) as anyone else that did the same. How is this fair, to block customers who purchased any game via retail from downloading the latest patches simply because you now offer it for digital download? You can't make an exception for games that have been released for several years now?

GoofTrooper,

You've completely misunderstood.

"Registration" is only available for games with serial numbers, which we started selling early in 2004 when we offered digital downloads as an option and removed our previous copy protection system. Patches for games with or without serial numbers are available with or without registration. There is _no difference_ in support between retail and online customers.

Because Uncommon Valor is a game that in its time has had both serialized and non-serialized releases, we do not include a serial number requirement in any patch for Uncommon Valor. v2.42 is a beta patch, not yet official and not yet finished. For that reason, we made it a private download so that game websites would not grab it or fansites distribute it as official yet.

With that said, the v2.42 patch installer itself does not require a serial number so you should not need to register with a serial number to download it. If that's not how it's working, I'll check it out - as v2.42 is a beta patch, it may have been posted differently.

Thank you for your response. I think that was my complaint, that the newest Beta is only available as a private download. I was downloading patch 1.604 for WITP when I noticed the change in the members’ area. I already have 2.42 and yes it does not require a serial number. My problem is when 2.43 comes out (or later) I will not be able to download them, I am assuming, that is until the official patch. Since there is the possibility that this will not happen it would be nice to see all patches available in the members area.

It turns out this was moved into the registered downloads by mistake last week when we upgraded the Members' Area to the Members' Club. It's going to be moved back to the public downloads, where it had always been, recognizing that the majority of UV users do not have serial numbers. Sorry for any confusion this caused.
