Question re: intel

My intel has given me the names of dozens of AK's and AP's, but never the location of any CV or BB, even though I know with decent certainty where they are (due to them sinking my ships!). Will I ever get a CV sighting in a SigInt or Operations report?

I've never seen it happen. Funny since in general I believe the whole original inspiration for the Intel Rule was the breaking of the JANAC code used by the Imperial Navy. Maybe the Navy just used it to gossip about the Army[:D]. They didn't like each other much.

I have had several intel reports as the allies with everything from CVs to SS. My best one was one that had I-?? moving to a specific location. I sent an ASW TF to that location and sank her the day she arrived.

Every time I have an enemy Air Combat TF visible on the map all I ever spot is the escort ships, never the CV's. Granted, the number of catalinas could be better over the area, but they've picked up the CA's and DD's in the group.

I find that some of the CAs are CVs, Some of the CLs are CAs, some of the DDs are CLs.....

OK so our recon elements are morons. I can understand any mistake, except for mistaking a flat-top for a cruiser.

If you look at some of the air search reports relating to such battles as midway or the series of naval battles around Guadalcanal you will discover that it was common for major mistakes to be mad ein identification; BB's being decsribed as CL's, AK's or CS's described as CV's, etc. I think the level of confusion in the game is reasonably realistic.

I've gotten such useful reports as

"CL Kuma is located at , "



I did get definative reports on two vessels that were in port such as,

"SS RO-124 is located at Makin Atoll"


But I have never gotten a useful report of a ship at sea.

i have id'd CVs occassionally. i may get a 10 CAs sighting which means some are CLs and some are DDs. am teaching myself excel so i can set up some type of spreadsheet to see if certain ijn ships hang out together. thus i can infer what might be with a tf if i id a couple of DDs. of course a 72 VALs and 90 KATEs attack on Port Moresby might indicate a CV or 2 or 3 even if not id'd by searchs.

If you detect a radio transmission from a Japanese base the odds are on the scroll over info will be enhanced for that turn. The intel report is just informing you that there is more info available at Tokyo should you wish to look at it. (I just discovered this feature and it's very good. For instance yesterday I picked up a signal from Truk, went and had a look and the port symbol informed me there was 65 ships in harbour, two of which were CA's.)

Both sides can get lots of potentially useful intel by watching the air balance numbers on bases and their changes from turn to turn. They will always be accurate and identical for both sides. You can even detect the presence and passage of carriers by for example looking for a KB-size change in the air balance at bases where you suspect the KB might be.
