Aircraft weapons range
Has anyone tried how reducing aircraft weapon range affecs air combat ?? It seems that most weapons have huge range compared to what can be a realistic combat range.

Anyone care to test ?? Or do I have to do that myself ? [:'(]

RE: Aircraft weapons range
Sorry, Sardaukar, looks like you'll have to do some of the work yourself...[:D]

Figures !! it's so hard to get good help nowadays !! [:D]
But anyhow, I think reducing weapon range might reduce "combat phases" in air combat..making it less deadly. Could also screw the game totally... OK..have to give it a go..[:'(]

Let us know how it goes.
I am considering doing things similar to the changes in Nik's mod - increasing aircraft durability, and increasing ground AA weapon effectiveness to compensate. That should also result in less bloody air warfare. It will be a while yet before I can test it though...

I think someone posted that numbers of AA weapon in units was also way too low. That might also help a bit if TOEs were corrected.

RE: Aircraft weapons range
OK..did some testing about weapon range effects in fighter vs. fighter combat. Planes were taken straight from CHS1.06 and tests were run under official 1.6 patch (non-beta). FOW etc. were off, off course
I had 2x27 A6M2 and 2x27 P-40E in size 10 bases, range to each other was 2. Fighters were making sweeps to each other bases, altitude 15 000. Attacking units were put on full sweep, defending ones on 90% CAP.
Unmodified comparison results: 492 planes participating to air combat, 91 destroyed + 17 damaged.
Modified the weapons in fighters by dropping hteir range to half or close to that. A6M2 had Mgs reduced from range 3 to 2, 20 mm cannons from 5 to 2. P-40Es had .50 cal reduced from range 4 to 2.
Results were: 491 planes participating to air combat, 91 destroyed + 13 damaged.
So it didn't seem to do much...
Then I decided to be bit more scientific and run air combat 12 times with exactly the same settings, restarting the test scenarios after each combat. Weapon modifications were same. A6M2s were making sweeps at 15 000 against P-40E CAP (90%) at 15 000.
Unmodified results: 648 A6M2 participating, 80 destroyed, 3 damaged.
378 P-40E participating, 118 destroyed, 43 damaged.
Modified results: 648 A6M2 participating, 81 destroyed, 9 damaged.
369 P-40E participating, 112 destroyed, 39 damaged.
So, even though results may not be total proof statistically, reducing weapon range in fighter vs. fighter combat has very small effect...if having effect at all. So it's not a way to reduce air-to-air losses, it seems.
Now that I have created test scenario, it'll be easy to test weapon accuracy modifications or durability modifications and their effect in fighter vs. fighter combat. Andrew Brown, want me to try to check how weapon accuracy effects ?? I think durability doesn't need much testing, but can do that too.

RE: Aircraft weapons range
Here's a rethreat of a test I did some months ago. It didn't meet with much interest, I'm afraid, so I didn't pursue it further. However I still feel that reducing gun accuracy might hold some promise. It also has the advantage that it only really effects A2A combat and thus doesn't have the knock-on effects of increasing durability.

A few preliminary observations:
Individual tests not statistically valid by any means.
Tests 1A-1D suggests that downgrading gun range and accuracy lowers A2A losses.
Relative losses of all aircraft involved, if 1A = 100, then:
1A (vanilla, max XP, MRL): 100
1B: (vanilla, middling XP, MRL): 74
1C: (mod, max XP, MRL): 63
1D: (mod, middling XP, MRL): 27
As the ratio between tests 1A & 1B is 1.4:1.0, and the ratio between 1C & 1D is 2.4:1.0, it is suggested that lowering aircraft gun performance also puts a greater premium on pilot experience.
Relative losses of all fighters involved, if 4A = 100, then:
4A: (vanilla): 100
4B: (range 1): 79
4C: (accuracy 50%): 60
4D: (range 1, accuracy 50%): 62

A few preliminary observations:
Individual tests not statistically valid by any means.
Tests 1A-1D suggests that downgrading gun range and accuracy lowers A2A losses.
Relative losses of all aircraft involved, if 1A = 100, then:
1A (vanilla, max XP, MRL): 100
1B: (vanilla, middling XP, MRL): 74
1C: (mod, max XP, MRL): 63
1D: (mod, middling XP, MRL): 27
As the ratio between tests 1A & 1B is 1.4:1.0, and the ratio between 1C & 1D is 2.4:1.0, it is suggested that lowering aircraft gun performance also puts a greater premium on pilot experience.
Relative losses of all fighters involved, if 4A = 100, then:
4A: (vanilla): 100
4B: (range 1): 79
4C: (accuracy 50%): 60
4D: (range 1, accuracy 50%): 62
Where's the Any key?

RE: Aircraft weapons range
Yes, I'm inclining to think that logical answer for too deadly Air-to-Air Combat is to reduce weapon accuracy instead of adding plane durability. And I think AA problems are better solved by adding more !realistic" number of AA weapons to AA units/base forces. And maybe taking the dreaded min firing altitude off from *some* weapons and adding good mix of weapons that can cover all low-middle altitudes.
