Some questions about protectorates

Post by two_larsens »

Hello,

I have some more questions here. Is it possible to 'leave' a protectorate once it falls under your colors? Or is it possible to get that already owned protectorate (striped territory) to become full ownership? Also, why is it that some countries will declare war eventhough they're all smily face? Is it just a random event? It seems that inter country relationships are of little guidance then.

I'm a newbie myself but from what I've seen you can 'liberate' protectorates in one of the diplomacy screens. But so far I haven't found a way to turn protectorates directly into ownership. I guess you could liberate then put a diplomat on a coup-mission on their territory and hope for the best.

Edit: haven't upgraded to 1.2 beta yet... I'm having too much fun with my swedish game on 1.1.

Yes you can free (Liberate) a Protectorate from the screen that comes up when you hit the "control" and "P" on your keyboard.

Nope, once a Protectorate is yours, they'd not likely just allow themselves to become conquered without a fight, so you have to free them and then conquer them.

It would make sense to be able to use your diplomats to coup your own minors, but then, diplomats are already too powerful...

There are several reasons a smiley-faced friendly Nation will sometimes DoW you:

1) You are in the lead in Glory and they decide you need to be stopped

2) They had previously concluded a mutual defense treaty with a Nation you then DoW'd (and by treaty they had to then attack you) - the AI will do this, by the way

3) You attacked a minor they then sponsored and warned you off and you ignored them

4) I suspect this but cannot prove it - if they are very powerful and see that you are weakened for some reason (a recent war, etc)

Hope that helps

Ralegh has posted a link to his protectorate guide elsewhere in this forum, I believe the thread is in the War Room.

I highly recommend that guide. It will help you determine which provinces you want as protectorates and which ones are likely better to just be provinces you own.
