Check out this Japanese Navy website recruitment ad...

http://www.jda.go.jp/JMSDF/info/event/cm_p/16cm.html

It's odd, but the girl at the end doesn't look like the sorts of girls who end up in the Japanese military in the anime that I watch...[;)]

Hmmm... come to think of it, the one woman on board the "Mirai" in "Zipang" wasn't much to look at either...[;)]

One of the scenes in the movie that's playing on the botom of the screen in the second ULR ( http://www.jda.go.jp/JMSDF/info/event/cm_p/ ) sure looked like the old WW2 battleline. Boy the Chinese would freak if they saw that in the ad. They hate any reference to Japan's WW2 military.

If you go into the main JMSDF website there are lots of pages with photos of the modern Japanese Navy sailing in Battle Line, testing missiles and various other things. They also make a big deal about their joint maneauvers with the US Navy. (That's definitely for the Chinese and North Koreans to see...)

hey, there is actually an ENGLISH translation of Zipang? I've been wanting to read that manga for a while, but the japanese version, meant for adults, is very hard for me to read! god i love the japanese lack of common sense when making commercials (you should see what is on normal japanese tv!)

As far as I know, the manga hasn't been translated yet. I've only watched the anime, I haven't read the manga. I only know common 300 or 400 kanji, so reading something like the Zipang manga is really tough - I spend more time with a kanji dictionary than actually reading! [X(]

The anime was quite good. AFAIK, the raw bit torrent versions are still floating around "BT Space", and I believe that about half of it has been fansubbed. I have the Region 2 DVDs and they came with complete scripts for the entire series. If I weren't spending so much time playing WitP I would sit down with my kanji dictionary and go through them...[:D]

In any event, I recommend the anime highly, if only for the set-piece when the Mirai is attacked by the TF lead by the Wasp.

Cheers -

I never suspected that my replacements were being trained by the In Living Color "Fly-girls"

Ok, my plot for world domination is now to first conquer Japan. Given what I just saw of their Navy it shouldn't be hard. I figure a rubber dingy, an M-16 and a loud speaker system playing the Village People ought to do it. [:D]

Those are all modern ships shown in the commercial: O.H Perry class, Spruance class and Arleigh Burkes.

Loved the shot of the 3 P-3s flying in formation past Mt. Fuji, same basic aircraft I flew in.

Was it as easy to detect russian subs in RL as in Dangerous Waters? How well the whole thing is modelled compared to RL?

Oh, I see...

I think I heard of another cruise line called "SEAMAN SHIP! LOVE FOR SAIL" [:D]

Seriously though, I can unsderstand (with my very limited understanding of Nihon-Jin) the context of the messege that commercial sends. The Japanese language is actually a very beautiful and highly poetic language.

She's still a cutie though!

...maybe not quite as lovely as CobraAus's avatar, but I still wouldn't mind being seen in public with her.
