The Savoia-Marchetti SM.82 Marsupiale

Post by Greyshaft »

Designed as a ‘colonial’ bomber able to operate from primitive airfields, the Savoia-Marchetti SM.82 Marsupiale (also known as ‘Canguro’ = ‘Kangaroo’) had a cavernous interior which could hold a disassembled CR 42 fighter. Its three 950hp engines allowed a 4,000kg bombload and its 3,000 range permitted bombing of oil refineries in Bahrain from bases in Italy.

3000 range ? 3000 miles ? 3000 km ? Anyway, the SM.82 has a range of 9 in WiF, too bad. It should have been an extendable range if those 3000 are true.
We need to be careful with range, as operational ranges were always less than maximum range. I think that you should be precise in your text as to which range you are refereing.

I suspect that there are many potential errors in this category, even in reference books.

There used to be big debates in the WiTP forum over the range of the Betty bomber when it carries a torpedo. Furthermore, less than ideal weather (or headwinds) can reduce range considerably. (I know range is unaffected in WiF by weather, it's either go/no-go, or halved attack strength...) Different marks of the same aircraft have different speeds, max altitude, range, etc...

Point being, consult multiple scources, and see if you can determine what the range is when the aircraft is carrying the normal payload. And even then, verify from several different scources if possible. The listed max range may be what the manufacturer claims, but actual combat use may indicate otherwise.

One question that arises is whether the 3000 (km probably) is one way or round trip. Also, the amount of payload plays a role. If simply rebasing, a plane has a greater range in WIF too.
