Top Twenty BoB Airfields

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Top Twenty BoB Airfields

Post by otisabuser2 »

I have mentioned on another site that most of the airfields in BoB in southern England are slightly misplaced. { The two big bloopers are Redhill which was placed just outside Bristol, though should actually be below London. The other being the inclusion of Westhampnet and Goodwood in the original version, though they are the same place }

Here’s your chance to suggest your Top Twenty airfields that are not currently in the game, that you think should go in. I’ll start you off with the first ten, and we’ll modify the list as better suggestions come in.

Chilbolton...................Middle Wallop sector. Used by 238 Sqn.

Hullavington...............9 MU ( maintenance unit ) Filton sector. Used by 87 Sqn

Shoreham..................Used by nightfighters from Fighter Interception Unit

Matlaske....................Coltishall sector satellite. Used by 72 Sqn

Wellingore..................relief landing ground for Digby sector.

Hatston......................FAA base in Orkneys, protects Skapa Flow base

North Coates..............Used by fighters protecting coastal shipping off Grimsby

Colerne......................39 MU. Also used by 87 Sqn

Collyweston................Used by several units flying out of Wittering

Brize Norton...............purely because it was heavily attacked on 16th August. Home to 6 MU. 46 aircraft destroyed.

Otis has suggested Hatston in the Orkneys. We should also have Castletown on the Isle of Man, if we add in the two FAA fighter squadrons that Otis and I discussed more than three years ago on JCL's forum. Basically, lots of FAA squadrons were based ashore during the BoB period, but were mostly either in training or transit between carriers. However, Otis and I both felt there was a case for including two of them which had more permanent shore air defence roles: 804 Naval Air Squadron based at Hatston in the Orkneys from November 1939, and 808 NAS, which was operational from 5 September 1940 at Castletown for patrols over the Irish Sea. 804 NAS flew Sea Gladiators - it sometimes sent detachments to carriers during the BoB period, but this was balanced by other detachments of FAA fighters (Skuas and Rocs) coming ashore, so a permanent 804 presence would represent nicely the FAA defences for Scapa. 808 flew Fulmars, so would require another aircraft in the database. I fully accept that neither would play a huge role, given both their remote locations and the inferior performance of the aircraft, but maybe worth including for completeness, and would allow the British player to be slightly less inhibited about denuding his northern area.

Yes, it is. I've quite clearly lost the plot already. [;)]

Thanks Greyshaft.

If we had more airfields, do we want any that Fighter Command actually used just assigned to them from start.....

Or do we want the game to switch command of a field nearest say Tangmere to FC, when Tangmere gets trashed by the LW.....

Or would we like to be able to switch a field to FC at will, say one every 3 days ?

...Or just add another category, called "Alternative FC fields", which are normal fields but with a Comms delay of 5.

( FC fields have a Comm delay of 3. Bomber and CC fields havd a Comm delay of 10 ).
