Combat leftovers

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Combat leftovers

Post by Grand_Armee »

In quick battles, I've noticed that if I have an army much over 120K, there is always a unit or two that remain in the "Routed" column...this is without bringing in reserves.

Is this the game just limiting the combat size, or is it a reflection upon the abilities of the Generals within that army to bring numbers into the fight? Or, is a reflection upon the nation's historical ability to utilize combat assets to the full. Or, is it something else altogether.

Many books concede to the French of the period a greater affinity for getting the most men actually into the combat, while the other European powers were regarded as less able to do so.

This fact has been discussed in other threads and noted, with the biggest concern not being the limitation per se, but rather the inability to choose which units _do_ participate.

In some cases, for example, a French Guard unit might be left out of the unit choice mix, and instead include a Militia unit.

I cannot answer your question specifically, but have noted that the same unit limits in detailed combat seem to apply in quick battles as well. In most detailed battles, each side will be limited to somewhere between 9 and 15 divisions per side, depending on terrain, weather, etc (prior to reinforcement). Your mention of 120,000 would indicate approx 12 divisions, right in the middle.

I've read the other threads, but was still looking for something definitive. I always build my corps alike so that I get a good mix for battle. Hate ending up with too much of one arm and not enough of another. When I have Guards, I always stick em in a corp.
