Allied uber air

Post by Captain Ed »

I have come to the conclusion that WITP in its present form is broken.Playing a PBEM it is Sept 42 I am getting airraids of 200 LRB from Darwin destroying Kendari at the moment I stand down the cap Hmmmm. Mandaly smashed by 150 LRB from India only when LRCAP from Lashio cannot fly Hmmm. Luganville hit by 60 LRB at the moment the LRCAP from carriers is Rained in Hmmm. Pago Pago hit by 60 to 80 LRB from Fiji again when LRCAP is unavailble. Has the allied AI got too much info Hmmm. These raids are too frequent to be coincidental. My human opponent can not possibly guess correctly all the time when to fly raids I am sure it is left to commander discretion. Not sure of Allied LRB at this stage of the war but it seems excessive. We are playing with PDU`s on so I am sure the allies are using formations that would not otherwise have 4E LRB`s just as I am equipping formations with aircraft they would not otherwise have. Any thoughts on the Allied uber air and PDU`s it would seem to be a huge advantage to the allies, not so much too Japan with its limited aircraft production. I think that PDU`s have ruined WITP. At least 1000 4E LRBs are in theatre now. Is this a credible number in reality.[&:]

well he could have those bases targeted everyday but they probably dont fly because of the CAP check.

Also with PDU on i always go by a simple house rule that 2E squadrons cant be upgraded to 4E. Its very gamey and Ahistoric imo. PDU is best for fighters and other single enigine planes otherwise it can be prety ugly

IMHO a big mistake was made when the Allied 2e bomber groups/squadrons gained the ability to use PDU to upgrade to 4e. That was a step too far. 2e should stay as 2e, 4e as 4e. As for that Japs I'm not too worried - if they can produce them let them fly them.

P.S. I'm not a fanboy of any persuasion[:D]

Allied 4e bombers clobbering everything with 13 hexes of an Allied AF(5), is not any more a-historical than IJA divisions mopping the floor China, or Japanese divisions showing up off the coast of India.

This is why it's important to actually discuss these things with your PBEM opponent first.

Both of you should agree to use (or not) PDUs. Or you should agree on constraints BEFOREHAND. Not just when the situation doesn't suit you.

Ahh but we did agree to use PDU`s without thinking through the ramifications of same, as I am sure other`s have done also. I think now that I would not agree to use PDU`s or at least agree to house rules. It is my hope that my post will enable others to consider the PDU carefully before using it. However my rant is not exclusive to PDU`s but the AI`s ability or maybe I am just imagining it has superpowers.

I'm pretty sure the impacts of the PDU can be reduced by a more "realistic" Allied replacement rate and on map logistics situation. Irrelevant and I are about to embark on a PBEM test of a CHS mod which has CHS production figures and a gutted logistics model.

That being said, an agreed to limitation to which unit types can be upgraded helps too.

Capt,

With my PBEM opponents, we have managed to keep a fairly good rapport. Just send him an email, and discuss the situation.

If you're in Sept 42, you've certainly already invested a lot time. I seriously doubt that either you or your opponent want to walk away.

Negotiate.

Yes Capt Ed, lets negotiate! Eventhough our game is only in March 42, I suspect you(Allies) have been ramping up your bomber groups and squadrons to the 4 engine type. Been waiting for the uber-bomber offensive that will bring the boys home by Christmas! Terry[:D]

No of course we are not wanting to walk away. This is a situation I do not believe either of us foresaw. I have to wonder how bad it will get, 1000 plane bomber raids by Xmas[X(]

I agree that the 4E LRBs are really the Allied uberweapon in 1942 ... but they are the only one !

However, I am far from one thousand 4E LRB :
In Darwin : 211
In Noumea : 48 (and the last raid was not really a success)
In Suva (Fidji) : 128

There are 2 squadrons in PH but they are only looking for Japanese subs.

However, from now on, I will not convert any 2E LRB to a 4E LRB ... and so I will now have to find a way to use the A-20 [:D]

Don`t do that Spooky then I will have to do that in my other PBEM. I will muddle through.
My main concern was that others consider PDU`s if they are about to embark on a PBEM.
Beside`s you haven`t met my 500 Tony`s in Mandalay yet [:D] I wish

My original post had more to do with the AI`s ability than PDU`s. It would seem to have an uncanny ability to fly at the right time. I guess Pilots just should not take a bathroom break in this game.

It should be no suprise that bombers fly when you do not assign CAP. There is a portion of the bomber routine (documented in the manual, even) that restricts LBA from flying if the number of escorts is not significant in comparison with the CAP. If you are flying CAP (requires a minimum of 9 CAP), 2E bombers will never attack without escort. If you want to keep the raids from occurring, then put up at least 9 fighters (even Nates/Claudes will do) on CAP. You can stop LBA with a Chutai of Nates at 90 percent CAP. Alternatively, you use Daitai as CAP (27 fighters at 40 or 50 percent), or Sentai (36 fighters at 30-40 percent CAP). This is only supposed to affect 2E bombers, but it is possible that it has some effect on 4E as well.

So what may be happening is that your opponent sets his bombers to bomb every day, and you set your cap to fly every day. Then one day, you elect to stand your fighters down. All of a sudden, his bombers fly - and you get pounded. You should also be aware that CAP flying from another hex does not seem to get counted when the mission is triggerred, so occasionally you will get a mission against a large CAP if the target base has no fighters flying CAP from it, but other fighters at nearby bases are flying CAP. One way to have fun with that is to empty the target base and fly CAP in as many bases as you can within 2 hexes of the target base. His bombers will eventually fly without escort and run into a fairly nasty CAP.

A fighter unit flying CAP over his own hex will basically have between 0 and 5 FAT. So you never need to ground them. I'm pretty sure that fatigue decreases during the night, so a unit showing at 5 at the end of the turn will be at 0 (or maybe 1 or 2) the next morning (it if flies by day). So you may fly any offensive mission as if you grounded your unit the day before.

As for heavy bombers they will fly even against CAP. Just had a PBEM opponent attack Rangoon with 48 B-17E and 9 Il-4. 51 Zero, 31 Nates and 33 Oscars intercept. 16 B-17E and 7 Il-4c down against 2 Oscars and 2 Zeroes. Nates shot down 5 Il-4c and 1 B-17E [:'(][X(][8D][:D] !!!! All bombers turned back. All my fighters are flying LRCAP 100% over Rangoon (their own base = 100% CAP) since at least a week. Fatigue is between 5 and 8 at the end of this turn.

So are you saying that LR CAP does not prevent unescorted missions while CAP does?

4-eng bombers are immune to CAP check, and Il-4s rolled high enough to pass.

LrCAP suffers penaly based on the number of factors (i think most important are range and fatigue). The best way to CAP the base is to put fighters on escort, range 0, 90% CAP.
