Beach landings

Post by Taglia »

I don't know what does "people" think about this.
Are beach landings (--> not in a base hex) considered gamey or what?

They are considered gamey by some. If you land on a beach, that is not defended by your enemy, you have no landing disruption and casualties. At least none are shown on the screen, as for "normal landings". On the other hand, if enemy units are in the hex, you take casualties as if you are landing in a base.

I myself think they are OK. In RL all coast should be defended, not only ports. And landing on an empty enemy base will show a message with "casualties" but in fact squads are only disrupted.

Personally, I maintain a house-rule against landing anwhere in PBEM.

But it's just a matter of being clear on it with your opponent before-hand.

And it takes longer to unload. And 1-2 IJA divisions in non base hex with 4-6 entrenchment can hold 8-10 allied divisions. And than allies will have to supply that beachhead. Much more sense for Allies would be to do classic base jumps. Suppress the base with LBA, land in force, capture the base, move in LBA, repeat.

CHS provides much less 6 level airfield bases suitable for LBA campaign, therefore defence for Japan is easier. BTW AB made a lot of coastal hexes swamps, so landing is impossible there.

Beach Landings are OK.

It makes a defender spread ou a bit thinner and allowing wider strategical choices, you just cant stack a base.

As a negative, they usually make poor bases and dont have road/trails so getting out of them is slow.

But they should be used, even setting up a Flying Boat base or a L1 airbase could aid your campaign.
(Some bases rate that title purely for historical reasons, if the 1 USMC Div landed at Thousand Islands Bay it would be available a spot capable of a large base!!)

I don't think that's gamey at all, otherwise the Allies would have landed at Calais in '44! [:D]
Remember, as a wise man once said:
we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the... Fleet, would carry on the struggle...

I don't like non-base landings. Given the ZOC rules, it is too easy to cut off retreats by landing all around with relatively insignificant forces. I think that the fact that paras can only drop in base hexes gives you an indication that the designers did not intend that non-base hexes be used for landings. But, that's just me.

I agree with you.

Like Feinder said, just make sure you and your opponent are ok on this. Japan gets to exploit this for 1 year. Allies get to exploit it for the rest of the game after 42.

Paras can be dropped into off base hexes. My IJA opponent was dropping SNL units on top of my units advancing through the Burma trails to cancel their movement to win some time.

I do beach landings, but there are either main landings (for example I landed once in Java just E of Batavia, and then cut the island to Tjilitjap) or if they are surrounding elements, they are in some force, not 3 squads but a full regiment.

Uh huh. So, where are my Pacific based Mulberrys and cross channel pipelines then? [:'(]
