Curious about Allied Refit timing

Post by kfmiller41 »

In my campaign as the allies I noticed right away that most of my Destroyers and some of my other surface forces if they are in port on turn one go into refit, which adds on average about 10-15 points of sys damage to each ship, effectively putting them in port for a several weeks. It also keeps the US fleet from going to far west because of lack of escorts [:-] and it didn't take long to see what submarines can do to unescorted or even escorted fleets. My question was is this intentional to slow down a US response so Japan has a chance to conquer the Phillipines? I don't have a problem with it myself but was just wondering.[:D]

It is meant 1) to slow down the US fleet, and 2) to have players make a choice. Historically, US destroyers had their DC armaments removed in peace time (They weren't requipped until 1939-1940 I believe). You can have your fleet not upgrade and sail immediately, but the downside of this of course is you will have no anti submarine protection. So, you can upgrade your fleet and wait, sortie your whole fleet, or upgrade some 30 DDs, and send the rest out to meet the Japanese.

It was mainly as a historical measure, with the added bonus of slowing the US down.

Thanks, thats what I thought and I decided to let my DD's undergo the upgrade. Have a feeling anti-sub capability is going to matter alot more than people think[:'(]. Besides it takes time to get stockpiles of fuel and supplies staged before you move so I know I have time.

Surprisingly in my AI game the Destroyers repaired fairly quickly. I spread them around to different ports and it seemed like I was down in the low teens within a week.
