Clash of the Titans: Alikchi vs. Gary

Post by GaryChildress »

I wasn't going to do an AAR on this but then decided to throw in a few posts here and there just for kicks. I'm hoping Alikchi will have time to throw in a few rebuttals here and there although he's busy working on the Iron Storm scenario for WitP.

Scenario: Clash of the Titans

Settings

Turn Cycle: 1 Day
Automatic 1st Turn: OFF
Sub Doctrines: OFF
PDUs: ON (waiting on those 4E bombers!) [:D]
Fog of War: ON

Day 3: Here's a pretty sight! Too bad they all missed!

Hi all! Another AAR heesh.. I thought I'd stopped the addiction [:D]

As Gary said, this is a joint AAR, so I won't be posting anything too secret - but here's a map that shows the entire combat area for this scenario. Arrows and text courtesy of MS Paint because PSP died. [:'(]

Image

Gary launched a full-scale invasion of the Philippines the turn after this screenshot was taken, rendering all plans obsolete. Curse you Gary! [;)]

Those nasty Asian gentlemen with their flying contraptions have essentially knocked Langley out of the scenario (though she will most definitely survive). Thank God Constitution didn't eat one!

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. I have been forced onto the defensive and I feel trapped behind Luzon. However I have been able to get important intel data from my scouting/raiding destroyers and naval aviators. Now to see if my plans work out..

I'm keeping a day-by-day battle diary to post when this is all over and done with, too, but in the meantime youi'll hear about things blowing up, which is what you came for, right? [;)]

Poor Tosa, she's a wreck now. Alikchi caught my carriers last night, but...

Ahh.. my plan to make you waste torpedoes on my old BBs worked flawlessly.. [;)]

Delaware had to be scuttled, while North Dakota is heavily damaged (might make it though). All other ships are nowhere near sinking condition.[:)]

Gratifying to see Tosa get torn up by 12" shells.. Here's a shot of Delaware before her scuttling. Now in amazing technicolor Crappy MS Paint GIF Compression! [8D]

I also lost several more DDs today. Will be more thorough later.

The initial engagement was at 5,000 yards.. spitting range! I get the feeling that the Kido Butai and TF 1066 just sort of blundered into each other in the middle of the night. Even the 12 inchers will penetrate at that range.

Tit for tat

Post by GaryChildress »

Tosa, isolated now and surrounded by US warships and far from home isn't going to make it anywhere. Here she is just before scuttling.

[:D] That's one BB down!

As for "tit for tat".. well, I expect to see a lot more "tat" this next turn. [8D]

The burning hulk of Tosa was easily found by the destroyer squadron led by light cruisers Concord and Trenton. The flames silhouetted her against the night sky. Her escorting destroyer was quickly sunk, and Tosa herself was peppered with 3" fire before being sent to the bottom by torpedoes from Trenton.

Ahh.. back to PSP 9.

Today's unsuccessful attacks on the Japanese landing fleet at Lamon Bay included a 100lb bomb hit on the Japanese cruiser Ibuki.

A somewhat slow turn today.

Allied subs are starting to show their teeth, spreading out in the area around Formosa and northern Luzon. S-28 sunk a couple of torpedoes into the already-damaged ML Kurokami Maru today, sending her to the briny deep!

Meanwhile the Japanese have launched an invasion of Shanghai with one division and a supporting brigade. The Allied destroyers and gunboats have mostly escaped to Hong Kong, while the Japanese try to thin out the massive minefields (at least three ships have stumbled into them).
Ground combat at Shanghai

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 18177 troops, 180 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 17026 troops, 137 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese ground losses:
67 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Allied ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

I'm not sure where the "Kido Butai" slipped off to but my planned interception did not occur. Looks like we'll have to look elsewhere for prey..

Jeeves: Oh go fix it yourself. I'm busy checking my stock portfolio!

Ahh.. back to PSP 9.

Very nice quality pictures BTW. I'm going to have to get something other than MS Publisher for AARs. Red text just won't come out in my pictures. [8|]

Bwahaha! With the enemy's plan in my hands, I can completely annihil-- er. Hm. Forward this to Intelligence, Johhson. And tell them there's no hurry. [;)]

The loss of Yorktown is irksome. My carrier force is down to 1 with the Battle Force, with Langley under repair. You should see our combat reports, they're almost completely submarine attacks.

Our highly experiences Army Air Corps pilots report multiple enemy task forces composed of "large capital ships" surrounding the sea near the Battle Force and Scouting Force. Battle Force and Scouting Force have more or less reached their destination and we should be seeing some interesting movements tomorrow. Fuel is low and underway replenishment is as of yet unheard of so we'll be turning back soon.

I love the feeling of power I get when I look at the USN Battle Force. Nearly every modern dreadnaught in the US Navy, with supporting units, all split into 10 different task forces. This adds up to 21 BBs (6 SoDaks, 4 Colorados, 2 Tennessees, 2 Nevadas, 2 Pennsylvanias, 3 New Mexico, 2 New Yorks), 8 modern (21-22 knot) CAs, 3 CLs, and 61 destroyers. It's the biggest power trip I've had in this game, even stronger than in WitP. I can send the Battle Force to a hex. Whatever hex it is, I OWN that hex.

Scouting Force (the Lexingtons and the double DesDiv that sent Tosa to the bottom) is normally clearing the way a few hexes ahead but will be reuniting with Battle Force tomorrow to combine our ASW coverage and to support Battle Force in the coming battle (hopefully).
