Some Marine Books that are Worth it!

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Some Marine Books that are Worth it!

Post by Wild Bill »

For those afficionados of the Pacific, I wish to recommend a 4 volume set on that theme.

It is titled: History of the U.S. Marine Corps Operations in World War II.

It is published by the historical division of the Corps. It is expensive. I think I paid nearly $200 for the set, but for those interested in the true story of the Corps, its worth it.

It covers so much in great detail. The bindings are solid, well made and they are a handsome collection to have on your bookshelf.

You might find them used somewhere much cheaper. I'll check Amazon.

Bill, what's great about this is that the HyperWar group is making many of these volumes available online.

See this link: http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USMC/

I've mentioned this frequently, but the US Marine Corps has become famous for its careful study of its operational history. This is how they stay on top of military trends, and in modern days, anticipate what is needed before it happens. Despite its reputation as being tradition bound and conservative, the Corps is in reality a very progressive organization.

Thank you so much for the link, Gunny! This is great. I should have known you would be on top of this! We're gonna do a Marine campaign for SPWAW. I guess you think it is about time, huh?

Apart from this very interesting internet version, does anyone know if this is actually printed? I would like to have it in my own library. This is a excellent read for me.

BTW Gunny: thanks for this excellent link. Keep this coming. I would like to see more of this stuff.

They are printed. and it is five volumes, not four. Not only my memory but my eyesight is getting worse.

I don't even remember where I got mine but I'll bet Amazon.com has them.

Oh, yeah, two more sites for you:

Mark "Doc" Flowers has a great tribute site for the WWII Marines

http://www.ww2gyrene.org/

And, a great forum for Pacific War buffs -- Wild Bill, "Doc" and I ("Gyrene Fan") visit frequently

Indeed. The Pacific War site is a "must visit" for anyone who has an interest in Pacific Operations in WW2 and beyond.
