You might also want to try "The Battle for Wesnoth" which is an open source fantasy wargame -- it's somewhat similar to Warlords or Age of Wonders.

I've had a lot of fun with it. Although some of the campaigns are very difficult.

Yes it is available in English and in French for the moment

I also advise Glest : a nice free single player, 3D, realtime strategy game for Windows with up to three computer opponents.

If you liked the old Empire Deluxe you might like this game. It's free and fun but the interface is really not to good. They are looking for testers for a new version of it.
