Trouble with some big guns...

Post by DuckofTindalos »

After many a moon, I've finally gotten around to doing a little testing on my mod, and I thought I'd start out with some of the heavies. So I unpacked my pet sea monster, the Satsuma.

Now, as the screenshot below tells you, a problem has arisen. The Satsuma has 4*2 20.1-inch guns, a new device added in slot 65. As illustrated, the Satsuma doesn't seem to have ANY guns at all! The only thing I can think of is that slot 65 isn't usable for ship devices; I've seen that before, but only in much higher slot numbers.

Anybody have any ideas?

the only thing I can think of is when you modifed/created the ship class did you also reset
the ship in the ships database
(that is move ship off its class then back again to pick up changes)

Does the number of turrets divide equally into the number of guns? In other words, 4 guns in 2 turrets, okay. 4 guns in 3 turrets, not okay.

Also, make sure you gave the gun ammo. I've forgotten to do that before.

show us a pic of the "class" and the "ship" database. That might help.

The lovely editor is a bit of a pig. One has to go into the individual ship screen and reinsert the ship class number for each member of the class. Of course, one could use the utility out there (can't remember who made it but I think it is called WITPCHK)

This is really a shot in the dark, but try reducing the turret armor. There are several places in this game where numbers have certain ceilings. Remember the "super-accurate bombers over 30000 feet" fiasco?

Hmmm.... 10 guns in 3 turrets, not okay?

Probably a dumb question, what class slot is it in?

Slot 6, and its only upgrade is in slot 615.

its the effect rating. You've passed a threshold

I did some quick testing, the threshold appears to be a cumulative value meaning its not the specific device that went over the magic number, it was the cumulative effect values of all gun devices. After removing all other weapons and leaving just the effect=4000 20.1in guns in place, the gun value reappeared:

I also noted that the guns will still fire and cause damage so the threshold appears to only impact the gun value calculation as displayed on the TF screen, not the actual device itself.

Hmm, I did some testing myself, putting Satsuma against the Montana, and I never saw a single 20-inch hit. Apparently, they just missed?

Yes.

The first test i did with an unaltered version did score a 20inch hit on a CL. They don't hit very often....but when they do...aiee

you may want to consider lowering the effect value anyway. As you can see with Arizona, they do a hell of a lot of damage per hit. Remember the game has only an all-critical hit location model.
