why does nothing in this game actually do anything?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

why does nothing in this game actually do anything?

Post by azraelck »

Why does my units feel the need to sit there and take artillery fire until their dead or in retreat? My artillery refuses to fire or move in any direction, and yes, I figured out how to call for a barrage. I tried the worthless tutorials and still, I have not seen a single sheel come from my artillery. I know that the little icon showed up, that looks like dirt and debris flying straight up in the air, in the hex where I set it. Yet 20 turns later, and not one shell has fallen.

Out of a company of tanks, I may have 5 that actually respond to my orders. Maybe a third of infantry will advance.

Out of all the units avaliable, the only ones that have actually responded to orders consistantly are the trucks and halftracks and such. Nothing that could even begin to fight, at best. Everything else refuses to so much as move. I can't even get the stupid fools to move into a stand of trees for cover when their being fired upon. And yes, I already know about suppression; these units are listed as "READY"; not pinned, routed, or retreating. the handful of units that actually respond to orders I can operate fine, even so far as taking a DV while playing as the Americans defending against a German assault. It was only 4 tanks, a couple half tracks, and a trio of anti tank rifles that I could actually give orders to, out of two companies of tanks, one of infantry, and a large number of mortars and a battery of howitzers. The only thing the other units would do is fire on anything that came into their view.

azraelck: Go to preference screen and shut off Command and Control. That should clear up your problem. Also check that ur fast artillery is OFF also while ur there. Besides the tutorials you should scan the manual.

With command and control on you must set objectives before you begin game. This is after you set your pieces up before you get out of deploy or nothing will move except recon stuff. Turn it off til you get used to the game and movement factors.

Thank you. I've been tearing out my hair trying to figure out why nothing actually does anything.

Hey guys,

If you are relatively new to the game, don't play with C&C on. I know it is a personal preference, but C&C adds a factor of difficulty that isn't necessary when you are attempting to learn the basics of the game. After you master the basic commands, then try the game with C&C on. I'm pretty sure most folks don't play with it on. I have not although I may be missing out on something.

I usually suffer massively more casualties with C&C on, as my troops won't move in any sort of flanking motion due to where the set objective lies. Heading straight into a hail a bullets instead of say, rounding a hill in a flanking move, is not my cup of tea. I realize that in some ways it is a lot more realistic to not have every unit know everything you, as the commander, know. Still, with C&C on it sometimes really hamstrings your units ability to make "in the field" adjustments. I play with it off.

Obviously I still have a lot to learn about how to play with C&C on.

I'm a big fan of C&C myself, but it does take more work, i.e., setting new objective hexes, planning ahead, cursing when you don't have enough orders to go around, etc. I still like it because I think it make the game more realistic.

However, many scenarios seem to have been made without taking it into consideration. For example, when there are maybe 3 AUX Inf Platoons (and you can't move them in DEPLOY mode because they are AUX), and each one has a single ATR unit mingled with it. This is a problem, since 2 of these ATRs are spread out and out of range of their platoon leader ATR.

You can just tell the scenario designer in a case like this probably doesn't use C&C.

With my core units, I will sometimes re-attach these types of units to an Inf Plt so they are under the Plt leader's command, but this doesn't help AUX units.
