Comments on 8.403?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

I really haven't had time to put it though its paces. I was hoping some others would have been commenting. [:(]

FWIW: I've played one long battle, against the Japanese, by Warrior, with 8.403 Mod. MG ambushes worked great 4/5 casualties on first round, mostly 0/1 casualties after they "went to ground". Tanks were no longer ultra accurate on first shot but usually got the job done. Flammers did not always knock out MG, AT bunkers and Caves without some pre-planning and a little work. I am presently playing the new campaign by Flashfyre and with two of four under my belt against the Germans I can say I like the new mods, At this time. Oh yeah, when an HT or Amtrak is hit when loaded, you get some heavy losses in the passenger department. Minor problem I noticed is that the crew usually gets out, but that gives your grunts free targets. "Hey ! Louie you take the driver, I got the gunner." "Don't you just like the smell of cordite just before breakfast ?"

When you combine the 8.403 mech with the "programmer conventions" applied to your OOB set of choice, then you have the best SPWaW yet.

Even better, Alby is still working on the weapons database for the upcoming Depot Mod OOB revision. We'll elaborate more on this as work progresses.

Gunter, you have to register in the Members Area first. Don't use your forum name --you'll need a different name for this specific area. After you register and receive your password via e-mail, you log-in and look under the "Members Downloads" list. 8.403 is there. Go to this link for registering: http://matrixgames.com/members/login.asp

Thanks. [:)]

Well

It is harder for my tanks to spot enemy soldiers moving towards them.
For some reason my my FAI (Russian scout car) the machine guns maulfunction more often. I have about 20 and about 1-2 malfunctioned almsot everyround. (Althought I don't think it is because of the patch)
Also my armour does less damage to enemy tropps.

Some stuff I'm noticing: I played a generated Soviet assault vs German defend, June 1944, on a narrow map. "Programmer's Conventions" used for the OOBs. I played as the Germans, and gave myself a few Panthers, Tigers, a couple of Nashorns, and three companies of foot SS infantry. The Russians came on in a horde of infantry accompanied by maybe 40-50 tanks, a mix of T-34s, some ISUs, and God knows what else.

This was during the time of the infamous "Destruction of Army Group Center", and I can now see how that happened. I had only 10 AFVs and four 88mm ATGs, and I was simply overwhelmed by that horde. At a distance, the Germans could score a few kills on the first shot, but once they came under fire, the hit rate declined dramatically.

The dreaded German MG42s have the capability to shred opposing infantry in the first few shots, but there are always more of the bad guys.

Within 4 or 5 turns, my lines were being overrun, with tanks entering my trenches, the SS bravely close-assulting and using their Panzerfausts to kill a few of those murderous Russian armored monsters. I even had 81mm mortars using direct fire. It was to no avail.

All of this played out with national ratings set "ON". Do the Russians s*ck? Not in 1944 -- the "Steamroller" is alive and well.

Invincible Germans, my a*s. I stopped the game before it degenerated into a complete slaughter. These were SS troops! My few Tigers and Panthers were overwhelmed by multiple hits -- not one survived.

That being said, Korpraali is in for a VERY difficult campaign as commander of a Romanian combat group on the Eastern Front. I hope his troops have made arrangements for the care of their families. [X(]

Solo play is now a different experience, with the programmer-intended settings being used.

I'm having to rely on the 20th Century American way of war --- overwhelm the enemy with artillery and air power (when available).

You guys really should give this a chance -- we all know that the AI isn't very smart, but the changes that were made over the years to increase play-balance for PBEM purposes have been mostly removed --this is what fouled-up the "vs AI" routines.

Now, I'm sure we will get into more "historicity vs playability" discussions, but, for me, a historical tactical sim is what was intended.

A further point -- SPWaW DOES give players the option to use a level-playing field, so the issue is moot.

Here's what I don't understand, Viking -- given that PBEMers can opt for "national ratings" OFF, why don't you simply play that way? Why whine about an optional feature?
