Getting tougher - Name the ship 01-19

Post by Feinder »

I'd like to see Ron get this one!

Obviously, not a profile. A view FROM the ship in question...

First hint -

It will help to actualy identify the gun mount first. If you can do that, it will go a long way towards identifying the ship.

I thought Dutch (De Ruyter) right away but the triple torp tubes say no. Does not look like any other Dutch cruiser. Float cranes are wrong design for French.

Tough one!

Isn't that that Vickers 25mm AA gun? For the Argentinean ship?

Yeah, I'm going to guess - and I'm not sure about this - but I'm guessing the Argentinian training cruiser La Argentina.

It is a ship from WitP. So no, not Agentinean.

Best guess now is the Tromp given the triple tube mount where it is and the twin AA mount (early 40MM?, perhaps 25mm predecessor). Those derriks look wrong though.

It is not the Tromp.

The triple mount torpedo comment may help you figure out what it is (considering which navies used triple mounts).

Your hint for 01-20:

The AA gun is semi-automatic(!) with a relatively low rate of fire (duh). It is neither a 20mm nor a 40mm gun.

I was thinking the 25mm bofors that was originally preferred by the RN. Darn this is a good one. Not the Leander or Achilles, and not the Hobart or Perth as neither carried triples.

(Sgt. Schultz voice on) I know notheeeng!! (Sgt. Schultz voice off)

Well, actually, the weird clock device is something i've seen on WW2 IJN ships, and not normally something i associate with WW2 Allied ships. But, then again, i got rid of all most of my ship library with id pics, etc., before moving...[:(]

EDIT - my other "clue" is that he said "not 20 mm, and not 40 mm." He didn't say 25 mm. So, could it be a 23 mm. or something?

The clock looking thing is a range clock. The were commonly equipped on many WW2 era (and pre-WW2) vessels.

Comments from an article about the Range Clock :

"The large dial with numbers was popularly known as a "range clock." This dial, along with one on the aft side of mainmast, was used to indicate the range to the target to other ships in line ahead and astern. The numbers painted around the base of the turret similarly indicated the azimuth, or direction, to the target. These two devices together, it was believed, would allow a squadron of ships to concentrate their gunfire on a single target even if some of the ships couldn't actually see the target themselves due to smoke or weather conditions."

(the article was discussing battleships, so I editted it).

A picture of a range clock on the USS Arizaona :

CAPTAIN: What time is it?

EXEC: Three o'clock, sir.

CAPTAIN: Excellent, they're in range now. Open fire!!!

I'd seen them on WW1 stuff - but hadn't seen them on Allied ships during WW2. Arizona, being sunk before the war really was declared, doesn't count![:'(]

Le Triomphant

We have a winner!

And Spence is new defending champion!

Oh, and the AA gun is a "37 mm/50 (1.46") CAIL Model 1933".

Spence, what tipped you off?
